Cold Storage Kids Run 2014 – Reflection from a Pseudo-Coach
There are many things I take for granted. One of them is the fact that, as a lively, energetic 6 year-old, my daughter would have no problem running (since that seems to be her default mode from getting to one place to another, like many preschoolers); that she would have a stamina that would outlast mine and that all I needed to do was run a few laps around the stadium with her to prepare her for our first ever Cold Storage Kids Run. I couldn’t be more wrong.Standing with the early blazing … [Read more...]
Happy Mothers’ Day 2014!
Motherhood is an awesome privilege...one which I am immensely thankful for. But mothering is hard work, some days, I feel stretched at all sides till I am losing it...This Mothers' Day, I am reminded that I have the best job in the world but I need to set my priorities right in order to be the Godly mother that God intended me to be. Can't be more grateful than to be a Mom...One of my favourite Christian Pastors, Ted Tripp (author of Shepherding a Child's Heart) once said: “Parenting will … [Read more...]
Motivational Monday: I’ll hold your hand…
Picture CreditIt started off as a regular Friday evening. I did the usual weekly grocery run, and as Daddy’s car pulled up at the taxi stand, I took a big step forward with a heavy load of groceries. Before I knew it, I slipped, lost my balance and plummeted onto the coarse tar road. The weight of my frame landed solely on my knees, I let out a painful yelp and slumped there paralyzed momentarily as curious passers-by looked on.The quick-witted Dana yelled for Daddy to step out of the car … [Read more...]
Positive Discipline: Is it possible to Discipline with Love?
Several episodes in recent months have raised the alert that our discipline methods might be ineffective. Late last year, a Sunday School teacher remarked that she's 'easily distracted, likes to do her own things' and urged us to spend time interceding for her. Early this year, I received a call from her form teacher informing me that Dana was 'displeased' that she wasn't picked the 'STAR' (model pupil) of the month. We were also told that Dana tends to be 'overly zealous' to share her … [Read more...]
Because they were not a dream…
Today, April 22nd, marks the death anniversary of our second son, Joash Sim, who was born straight into Heaven 7 years ago...This is the first time I am honouring him (and his siblings) on this blog...I reckon if I want to keep it real, I have to share this because this IS a big part of my motherhood journey... Background: We had fertility issues, the husband is fine but I had PCOs (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). In the 5th year of our marriage, with the help of assisted fertility and IVF, … [Read more...]
Dads and the daughters they love…
I was chatting with my Mommy friends over the weekend and this topic of a father's role in our daughters' lives came up. This article from Focus on the Family sheds more insights on this discussion and gives Dads ideas how to make this relationship count.Daddy plays with Dana at her level! The facts on DadResearch confirms, again and again, that a father plays a unique and important role in the development of his children’s self-esteem, behaviour, life choices and relationships. When it … [Read more...]
A Letter to my Daughter as she turns 6…
'Dana' - Bright as DayDear Danain less than 24 hours, you’ll be turning 6. As I tuck you into bed and gaze at your angelic little face, I can’t help but be overwhelmed by bitter sweet emotions as you excitedly count down to your 6th birthday…Many people see you as a confident little girl, good-nature and outgoing (sometimes too outspoken, that teachers wish you would be quieter so that others can have a chance to speak up). We would chastise and remind you daily to ‘listen and … [Read more...]
A fall on April’s Fools..
April didn't get off to a good start...This morning, as I was busy getting myself ready (after getting Dana ready), I stepped out of the bathroom in a hurry, slipped, fell backwards and hit my head flat on the floor. I let out a loud shriek which stunned Dana and the help. I was momentarily paralysed and writhing in shock. In desperation, they did what they knew best - ring Daddy. I assured him I was fine, that he needn't make the drive home but he turned up at the door anyway just … [Read more...]
Making that F.A.M.I.L.Y Connection
My friends know that my Grandma is very dear to me. As her eldest grand-daughter, I was raised under her care and we share a most special bond. After undergoing two major neurosurgery after a fall several years ago, it pains me to see her grown frail. Last Sunday, we celebrated her 87th. The week before her birthday, she was admitted to the A&E at NUH for acute abdominal pain and the family was wrought with worry. The prognosis was not good - we were told that one of her lungs … [Read more...]
