The good people at Hasbro delivered a box of the latest PLAY-DOH playset along with a really sweet birthday note to our home on Dana’s 5th Birthday yesterday. The birthday girl squealed with delight when she saw the gift. As a Mom of a preschooler, I like toys which encourages imaginative play while giving them the chance to work on their fine motor skills. This PLAY-DOH set seems to fit the bill.

The all new PLAY-DOH Sweet Shoppe Frosting Fun Bakery is perfect for budding pastry chefs in the family. Dana and I both enjoy baking and she has always been intrigued watching me frost batches of cookies and cupcakes but she rarely has the chance to have a go. It’s no wonder she can’t wait to get started!
What is unique about this set is the two small jars of PLAY-DOH PLUS included. PLAY-DOH PLUS is exactly like regular PLAY-DOH except it is much softer and fluffier. This new compound has a smoother texture which is ideal for adding dollops of frosting and detailed decorations on cakes, cookies and cupcakes.

This PLAY-DOH Sweet Shoppe Frosting Fun Bakery comes with fun accessories which provide endless options for creative play:
– 4 Cake Cutter Shapes to stamp out different cookies and cakes,
– 4 Frosting Tips,
– A Turntable to turn the cake at the Frosting Station,
– A Display Dome for the budding chefs to display their frosted cakes and treats
– It even comes with a Plate, Knife, Fork and a Serving Knife! How cute!

Kids take to PLAY-DOH like ducks take to water, Dana was no exception. After Daddy assembled the kit for her, she was happily playing with it for over 3 hours – making and cutting various bakery treats for us (her pretend customers) to ‘try’. On a wet, rainy afternoon like today, it provided 3 hours of solid indoor fun and plenty of parent-child bonding opportunities. In fact, she LOVED it so much she was reluctant to put it away at dinner time!

I was impressed with how realistic the frosting were and how malleable the new PLAY-DOH PLUS dough is, making them excellent for little hands. This is definitely an improvement from previous PLAY-DOH compounds and a far, far cry from the now defunct sticky plasticine we used to play in our childhood! Dana even coined the term ‘mould-y’ when she really meant how easily ‘mould-able’ the dough is, talk about language generalizations from a 5 yr old!

My biggest gripe with the set is that the 4 tubs of PLAY-DOH included are not the regular, full-size jars, but mini ones that run out very quickly. Dana had to take apart (and recycle) her bakes and frosting in order to produce new ones. As such, she wasn’t able to ‘bake’ a more extensive range of treats to showcase. I have since made a mental note to buy an additional pack of PLAY-DOH PLUS when I next visit “Toys R Us” so she can continue to create more awesome treats with the playset.

Overall, this is a great addition to the PLAY-DOH range and seeing how much the Princess likes it, I think it makes an excellent gift idea for kids aged 4 and up. We thank Hasbro for their birthday blessing and we know it will keep Dana happily entertained in the wet, thundery afternoons expected ahead.
