After hearing rave review from an ex-colleague about how her pre-schooler son benefitted from the programme, we enrolled Dana for Zoo-phonics lessons officially last month in March.
Zoo-phonics is a whole brain approach developed to make children strong readers (and spellers) using “phono” (hearing), “oral” (speaking), “visual” (seeing), “kinesthetic” (moving), and tactile (touching) activities. What we like about Zoo-phonics Programme is that it capitalises on the kinesthetic and musical-rhythmic multiple intelligences which Dana is strong in.
Each letter has an animal and a motion to go with it. Through this method of assosciating each letter of the alphabet to a specific action and an animal, children learn the sounds of the alphabet in a concrete and fun manner. Even as an adult, I enjoy singing along to the catchy animal songs and mimicking the fun bodily movements!
After accompanying Dana for few lessons, I feel that Zoo-phonics is an excellent way to introduce phonic awareness to young children as it’s very fast-paced and the teachers engage the class in constant motion (be it music, story-telling or art & craft). They also give the children room and space to make noise, interact and move about freely (which comes so naturally for them) while lesson is going on.
With the help of Zoo-phonics, we hope Dana will have a strong grasp of phonics which will put her on the path to becoming an avid reader (like her Daddy). The ability to decode (read) and encode (spell) will also come in useful when she starts formal schooling in a few year’s time. A worthwhile enrichment indeed!
