Doing a DIY trip can be quite unnerving, especially so with young lively kids and to a far flung cities. Even though DIY trips give us greater control over the itinerary and potentially cost-savings, whenever we plan a DIY trip, we look out for good, affordable accommodation that can provide us with just that little bit of extra comfort.
This was our 2nd time visiting the Danish Capital (the first was with an organised tour group to Scandinavian in June 2016), and we’ve picked Copenhagen as our launch pad for the epic DIY Iceland trip. We booked 5 nights at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers and used it as our ‘base’ to explore this beautiful and family-friendly city before we continued on to Iceland.
Here’s why Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers now ranks as one of our family’s Top 3 Fav Hotels of the World.
a) Convenience: Let’s face it – DIY trips gives us more flexibility but it is hard work. After a day negotiating public transport and endless walking (we’re talking about 15-20K steps daily at least), the last thing we want is for our hotel to be so remote that it is a challenge to get back to rest, especially with young kids in tow. Rest is crucial for DIY trippers because we need ample time to plan & prep for the next day’s itinerary.
In this regard, Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers offers so much convenience for travellers:
From airport: It is a short 10 minutes shuttle bus ride from the Copenhagen Airport and yes, the hotel shuttle can be pre-arranged with the reservations desk upon booking or via a simple email before you fly.
From city: The hotel is situated right next to the Metro (MRT) and the Interstate Train. Both bring us downtown to Copenhagen in 20 minutes where most other tourist sights are easily within reach. In fact, we travelled entirely via public transport in Copenhagen (metro, trains and buses, no taxis at all!) This goes to prove how accessible the hotel is. From the metro and train station, it’s just a short, 5-minute easy stroll back to the hotel. You won’t miss it.
From shopping and food: Right next to the hotel is Field’s Shopping Center, the largest shopping mall in Copenhagen. There are lots of shopping for apparel, home ware, groceries (yes, a large grocery store is there), pharmacy, electronics and wide variety of food ranging from Joe and the Juice to Burger King and more eateries. We love their local Pizza restaurant, Grom’s which is located in this mall too.
From attractions: Right at Field’s are Hop-On, Hop-Off Buses (Free with the Copenhagen Card) that bring us to major attractions in the city. One of our favourites is the Copenhagen Den Bla PlanetAquarium – Northern Europe largest Aquarium!
The kids also loved Kronborg Castle (more popularly known as Hamlet’s Castle) which is a pleasant train ride away. Originally, we had only devoted half a day to the castle but ended up spending an entire splendid Summer’s day there. The other kid-friendly attractions we visited in Copenhagen include Tivoli Gardens, Trampoline Street and the Experimentarium which we hope to share in future blog posts.
b) Cost: Hotels located right in city centre are costly in Europe. Copenhagen is no different. In fact, the cost escalates if your travel date coincides with major events (e.g. soccer matches, major pop concerts, art fests etc.) Rooms in European cities tend to be tiny, and definitely a squeeze for family travelling with kids. Most may not offer meals and other value-added benefits (such as airport shuttle) unless you are willing to pay through your nose.
So we decided to stay slightly off city centre for a whole lot of cost savings and picked Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers. In addition to the conveniences, our spacious connecting family room came with complimentary breakfast. This was great for families as we don’t have to wake up worrying about where to find food to feed the kids. It’s always such a luxury to enjoy unhurried breakfast in the hotel on vacations.
c) Cleanliness and Comfort – This is a Crowne Plaza hotel – a hotel brand that is synonymous with guests’ comfort. Till today, we still remember fondly our stay at the Crowne Plaza Changi Airport!
While we adults can rough it out in backpacker hostels, cleanliness and comfort cannot be compromised when we travel with kids. The rooms here are spacious, clean and well-appointed with a wide range of amenities that really took care of our needs. There were fresh fruits, bottled water and chocolate bars replenished each day by the housekeeping! Another note-worthy feature of the hotel is its eco-friendly, tropical lush landscaping (comprising of 60 trees and 4500 plants!) which has won many architectural awards. After each long sightseeing day, we feel so happy just to step back into this little oasis that is the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers!
d) Customer Service – Smiles, smiles, smiles, and more smiles. We actually looked forward to returning to the hotel after our sightseeing because know we would receive a warm welcome back at the hotel! Whenever we have any queries, be it directions to get to our destinations, opening timing of attractions or suggestions to reschedule our travel plans (due to the weather), the staff were ever so patient, helpful and obliging in making sure we received the most satisfactory answers.
We want to make special mention of the front desk team who helped us heaps with getting acquainted to the public transport system as well as the purchase of the Copenhagen Card (A Must Get!). There;’s also Alan, the supervisor at the breakfast restaurant who’s super friendly. His hearty greeting and smile never fails to warm our hearts in the cold, rainy and windy Copenhagen mornings. Every staff was incredibly warm and helpful to this large Singaporean family group travelling with boisterous kids!
e) Creature Comfort – Now, where do I start even start? More than just providing us with a clean and comfortable stay, Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers exceeded our expectations further:
Organic Breakfast Spread – A hearty breakfast is important to start any trip. The breakfast at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers comprises of one of the most generous organic and gluten-free spread we’ve seen in any hotel. From eggs to pastry, fruits and even the juices. Everything was delicious and nutritious. This is definitely one of the most well-balanced hotel breakfasts we’ve had on any trip!
Executive Lounge – Our family room comes with the use of the Executive Lounge where we can help ourselves to organic canapés, hot drinks and alcoholic beverages. Club access are bonus on DIY trips for those hours when the kids (and us) feel peckish in between meals. It also means that should we need a quiet place to chill or answer an urgent conference call, we can pop by the Club Lounge which opens till 10pm daily.
Letter to the GM (this is our new feature where we sum-up how we feel about our stay):
It’s really hard to think of anything negative about our stay at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers. Dear GM, you’ve got a really beautiful hotel with an amazing team. You’ve provided an oasis for travellers to enjoy this big city where we can truly recharge, rest and rejuvenate. Our stay in Copenhagen was so enjoyable, owing largely to your team’s round the clock top notch hospitality. With convenience, comfort and costs all taken care of, we would not hesitate to return the next time we visit Copenhagen. Thank you for being part of our lovely memory of Copenhagen!
