Jen says ‘Hello’.
Nestled in the quiet part of Tanglin Road, close to the start of Singapore’s famed Orchard Road, is a rather unassuming hotel which has much to offer her guests. Formerly the ‘Traders Hotel’, it has taken on a entirely new identity in a major re-branding exercise last year and reinvigorated with a major overhaul to its image. The Club Lounge, 15 Suites and 550 Guest Rooms have all been newly refurbished and the last phase of refurbishment is expected to complete soon in end-November 2015. Therefore, it gives us great delight to introduce you to ‘Jen’ – of Hotel Jen.
A Shangri-La member hotel, Hotel Jen personifies a new generation hotelier – a host who is chic, hip, casual and adept at meeting the needs of her guests – travellers who thirst for unique experiences and adventures that life brings.
Our family adventure took place over the Golden Jubilee Weekend, where our whole family was hosted by Jen, yes even the baby included. We had such a wonderfully charming time and Jen played such a big part in making our SG50 staycation so memorable.
Our Golden Jubilee Weekend made special in the company of our kids and with Jen!
Jen is…convenient:
The hotel is situated at the very beginning of Orchard Road (Cuscaden Road to be exact), far from the maddening crowd of Orchard. Taxis are abundant as most of them would pass through Jen en-route to Orchard Road. We had no problems getting taxis to our city locations on a few occasions even during the long weekend to enjoy the National Day festivities as we had parked our car in the hotel to avoid getting caught in traffic congestion.
Guests will be delighted to know that the hotel even provides complimentary shuttle services to many major shopping malls across Singapore. During our stay, we hopped on the hotel shuttle which brought us to Orchard MRT station and then took advantage of the Free MRT rides (in celebration of SG50 Golden Jubilee Weekend) to commute to Marina Bay for the Black Knights Aerial Displays. We thoroughly appreciated the convenience and mobility Jen offers.
Convenience right at the doorstep.
Within Jen itself are also surprising aspects of convenience rarely found in other hotels we’ve stayed in. In the lobby and the Club Lounge are small shelves which function as charging stations for their guests’ mobile devices – just plug your smart devices in, lock the shelf, take the keys and return awhile later fully charged! At the morning buffet breakfast, there is a dedicated area for guests to ‘Ta-pao’ or takeaway food items from the breakfast buffet for that bit of nibble later on. How thoughtful of Jen!
No charger? No problem. Jen has it all thought out.
When we stepped into the spacious Executive Suite which we were staying in, we were greeted with a retro-chic SMEG fridge (complete with fruits and chocs), a microwave and a kitchen sink, in essence a mini kitchenette in a hotel room. When you have travelled enough, you will realise that children are not always welcomed in certain hotels (with some facilities off limits to kids). To think that Jen takes into account the needs of family travellers makes us very touched.
Chic and Cool – Fridge, Microwave, Sink…Jen has got it all covered.
Jen is…comfortable:
Being a Shangri-La hotel, one can be assured that comfort is one of the hotel’s signature experience. Here at Hotel Jen Tanglin, the bed linen is crisp and mattress + pillows firm, offering us (sleep-deprived parents) the much needed rest from the demanding parenting duties and the momentous National Day festivities. In fact, the Executive Suite was big enough to accommodate our entire family of 4 comfortably (with the baby cot and a cool sofa that turns-down into a large comfy sofa bed for the daughter)! We were also impressed that Buddy’s cot came with thick, plush bedding, much like the large sofa bed Dana slept on. Jen really knows how to pamper her guests…regardless of age!
The Executive Lounge – luxurious and spacious accommodation for the whole family.
Lots of room for the little one to roam…
The sofa gets transformed into a firm, comfy bed big enough for two – one of the largest we’ve seen in our travels.
Just some of the things Jen makes you do.
With such warm welcome from Jen, no wonder we are all smiles!
Beyond the room, should you feel like a need for quiet moment to reply an email, read the papers or to enjoy a drink, go on up to the Club Lounge – one of the few Club Lounges around the world that remain open round the clock! Apart from the delectable spread of afternoon tea, evening cocktails and breakfast throughout the day, the Club Lounge even serves instant noodles upon request should hunger pangs strike at night!
Welcome to Hotel Jen Tanglin’s Club Lounge – open 24/7!
Contemporary, Calm and Chic.
Free flow of fruits and light bites all day. The coconut cookie was irresistible.
Fresh juices to beat the tropical heat…
Some of the delectable food from the Club Lounge’s Breakfast.
Warm scones and quiche for Afternoon Tea…perfect!
With connectivity at the top of travellers’ minds, of course Jen offers fast, unrestricted Wi-Fi connection, completely free, everywhere in the hotel. The gym is also open open 24 hours. There is also an outdoor 30-metre swimming pool and spa amid a lush garden. All the creature comforts which pamper the discerning travellers at your disposal.
Jen is…chic and hip:
Jen appeals to the contemporary urban ‘adventurer’ with her retro-chic furnishings that are a feast for the eyes. The modern decor is accentuated by the quality furnishings, fabrics and prints specially chosen to invigorate our sense of sight and touch. The bed even looks like it’s floating (a cool feature Jen calls ‘lift-off’!) with its base lighting creating an illusion the bed is floating! With the modern sassy personification, the friendliness exuded by the staff and the chic refurbishments, guests at Hotel Jen Tanglin can relax and recharge in a comfortable and unpretentious environment.
Press the ‘Lift-Off’ button and the bed ‘floats’!
Modern toilet furnishings add a touch of sophistication…
Stylish, retro…Jen’s style is a treat for the eyes.
Jen is quite the gem, everywhere you turn.
Jen is aesthetically pleasing.
Jen is…casual:
Comfort and luxury doesn’t always have to come with stiff and formal service. Here, Jen keeps her guests relaxed and casual, as if among good friends. The staff at Hotel Jen Tanglin don well-pressed, casual shirts with jeans. In fact, they have their names printed on a ‘police badges’ for guests to identify them! How novel. It serves as good conversation starters and instantly strengthens the connection because you feel as if you are dwelling in the company of friends.
Freshly made smoothies, those you would serve your friends when they visit.
Jen is…a gem:
Hotel Jen Tanglin is the closest hotel to Singapore’s newly minted UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Singapore Botanical Gardens. In fact, its location between the Botanical Gardens and Singapore’s iconic Orchard Road provides guests with the best of both worlds: nature and heritage at its doorstep, right in the heart of modern Singapore without ever missing a beat.
Jen’s Doodle Party
To celebrate the spirit of creativity and to usher in the last phase of the hotel’s refurbishment, Jen has commissioned the ‘Band of Doodlers’, a group of young local artists to doodle on an interactive art showcase on its premises last Saturday, 15 August 2015.
The Band of Doodlers drew live portraits on the hoarding, with a speech bubble to encourage guest participation through penning their thoughts, or adding on to the art piece. We were very privileged to be among the guests who left our mark on the 17-meter long doodle wall and the very special ‘Jen Heart Map’. The drawings reflect the journey of discovery and the sense of adventure that travellers may seek and experience during its pit stop at the hotel.

Special local places and food to recommend to fellow travellers..

A shot with the talented Band of Doodlers!
The hotel will unveil the new lobby and all day dining restaurant in December 2015, and will introduce the line-up of more new art pieces and artists in due course. We can’t wait Jen!
