When I opened up to share news of my cancer, friends, family and even faithful readers whom I’ve have never met, started to pour in prayers and encouragement. Some even gone the extra mile to send me tangible well wishes in the form of flowers, cupcakes, organic food, scented candles, biblical journals etc. My colleagues also threw me a surprise ‘Get-Well-Soon’ lunch the day before my op. Unbeknown to them; these acts of love, however tiny or insignificant they may seem, were life-giving. As the year draws to a close, I want to remember these friends who have been my beacons of light in my journey towards hope and cancer remission.
When I knew of the inaugural Skechers Friendship Walk right here in Singapore, I knew that, as ‘un-sporty’ as I am, I had to do this – to walk in celebration of life and friendship. Every step I took in that 5km walk, though short, was introspective. I recalled friends who reached out to me this year, and said a grateful prayer for each of them. Without friends, this cancer journey would have been so bleak, depressing and lonely…
Skechers Friendship Walk 2018
The inaugural Skechers Friendship Walk in Singapore was held at Gardens by the Bay East. The event space used was right below part of the Benjamin Sheares bridge and right next to Passion Wave – PA’s water-sports venue at Tanjung Rhu.
We loved the fact that the crowd was more manageable compared to many other mass walks and runs we have attended. It made the walk far more cosy and enjoyable especially for families with young children. As we waited for the rain to abate, we joined the other participants to play the variety of family-friendly games at the Skechers Festival Village. There were also a small selection of food and drinks to keep hunger pangs at bay. The wait gave us some time to connect with friends, chitchat, took wefies etc…
When the rain cleared and there was no more lighting risk, the walk began! And walk we did.

The 5km walk was very pleasant. Fanned by the cool evening breeze and accompanied by the scenic views of our favorite city skyline. At certain turns, there were family-friendly inflatable obstacle courses to add that bit of ‘challenge’ into the walk. The kids loved it! We had no trouble completing the walk at a leisurely pace and thoroughly enjoyed the route and company.
The rain did not dampen our spirits. In fact, it lent significance to the walk – that friendships, good friendships, should stand the test of life’s elements, come rain or shine. The Skechers Friendship Walk is a meaningful way to end the year and could potentially become an annual family tradition for us!
Skechers Shoes
We were first introduced to Skechers’ shoes about 6 years back. My husband is extra fussy about his footwear, as he believes in proper foot support since as educators, we are on our feet many hours a day.
Since then, we have worn our Skechers’ shoes virtually everyday and to almost every holiday vacation we’ve have made. From Scandinavia to Denmark and then to Iceland! Skechers has protected our feet from the elements and given us consistently good support for lots and lots of walking. At home, the attractive and comfortable features of Skechers shoes make it our ‘go to’ shoes whenever we participate in the annual Safari Zoo Run.
Recently, we discovered Skechers’ latest GoWalk Series with Goga Max soles which my family absolutely loves. The trendy design of the shoes makes it hip and easy to wear; slipping in and out easily. More importantly, it offers the much needed comfort and stability for walking! The Goga Max soles give the added cushioning effect and makes the shoes super comfy! These shoes has given me renewed motivation to get active and start walking.
Check out some of the other Skechers reviews we’ve done so far and you’ll see why it’s our family’s favourite shoe brand!
