Living in an urbanised city, it takes a conscientious effort to make a picnic happen. That’s why we are very appreciative of NTUC UFamily’s initiative to host the UPicnic in a bid to get more families to bond over food, fun and memories. This year is the second year that UPicnic is organised and we were delighted that it’s only a stone’s throw away from our home at West Coast Park. It sounds like an absurd idea to picnic in this intense heat that we are experiencing but all the families who were present took the humidity in their stride. Everyone, from young to old was bent to enjoy a good time.

We arrived slightly past 5pm and set up our base near the stage where activities and games were held. Dana brought along her fav picnic props and cuddly friends to support UPicnic’s whimsical theme for this year. There were Miffy, Elly, Teddy and Sandy (Annie’s Dog). She has always pretend-played with these picnic settings at home and we thought what better place to showcase her imagination than at the UPicnic!

As for me, I busied myself with the preparation of the food and picked a fresh bunch of posies to prettify the picnic ground. I’ve decided on an easy oriental menu this year which include Thai Pineapple Fried Rice, Jamie Oliver Chicken Skewers, Fruit Kebabs to go with chilled Apple Cider. Pity there are no photos of the spread as the photographer (i.e. Daddy) was too famished by then!

We took advantage of the evening breeze to check out the fringe activities at UPicnic and were extremely pleased to bring home a complimentary set of local postage stamps (sponsored by SingPost) customized with our family portrait taken on the spot. Dana also did some handicrafts with acrylic paints and glitter. She had wanted to go on the pony ride and we wanted to have a go at the Photo Booth with the VW campervan but the queues were snaking long. What we really like about UPicnic is the positive vibes from the hundreds of families gathered together to enjoy one another’s presence over a relaxed meal in the great outdoors. The kids also enjoyed the wide expanse of space to skip, hop, prance around and the chance to snack on picnic food using their little fingers!

It was a lovely Saturday well-spent as we soaked in the mass picnic atmosphere. Kudos to NTUC UFamily for organising such an enjoyable bonding activity for Singapore families. We look forward to participating next year’s UPicnic and hopefully invite more family members and friends to join us.
