We chanced upon this restaurant in 2010 when we were sourcing for a good casual party venue for Dana’s birthday. Opened in September 2009, Hatched at Evans Lodge is a restaurant that serves all day breakfast. As the name implies, the menu at Hatched carries all kinds of eggs – boiled, poached, baked, scrambled, fried, and omelette. Even though it isn’t our first meal at Hatched, there were so many different choices on the menu that it took us a while to decide what we want!
We went to Hatched for this review on a Saturday morning. By 9am, the restaurant was already packed with families with young ones in tow (like us!), couples sharing a cuppa and friends catching up with one another over a hearty breakfast.
Ambience
The interior exudes a very cosy and relaxed vibe, with egg-inspired memorabilia adorning the restaurant. I love the warm glow of the light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and the fun-loving chalkboard drawings. The place is bright and cheery as with any regular breakfast joint. Do note it can get a bit noisy and packed esp. on weekends so call in advance to reserve a table if you’re heading there.
Baby-Friendly
High chairs are readily available. Once you are seated, the service staff comes forward with a plastic children’s cutlery set (from Ikea). They were gracious to supply free flow of drinking water for patrons and has the initiative to cut the straws short for little guests. A small selection of food items are catered for little ‘hatchlings’ (e.g. Cheesie Toastie, BabyCino). Would have been brilliant if they supply some colouring materials for doodling to keep them occupied while waiting for food to be served.
Food
The selection of brunch items is wide but the food quality was definitely more superior in our past visits. This particular meal, Daddy’s ‘Surly Egg Benedict’ was over-cooked and the corned beef was a tad too salty for our liking. My ‘Sleepover Hatched Special Pancakes’ drizzled with maple syrup tasted yummy but lacked visual appeal. Food portions were generous and if we had more company, we would have ordered more variety of dishes to share. The hot beverages we ordered were good and Dana also polished off her ‘Healthy Lychee Yoghurt‘.
Service
The service was swift but they were a little understaffed for the Saturday morning crowd. The service staff seems harassed when patrons turn up without reservations. We recalled receiving much friendlier and personalized service when Uncle Henry, the boss’ dad, was there at the restaurant.
Price
Prices at Hatched are reasonable as it comes with no service charge (this makes it slightly cheaper than other all-day breakfast joints such as Rider’s Lodge, Wild Honey and Cedele). That might be a good incentive to give Hatched a try eh?
Overall Rating
Hatched is a cosy restaurant to bring your families for a relaxed, healthy brunch or if you are craving for breakfast food anytime of the day. They’ve recently opened a new branch (Hatched 2) at Holland Village. It might be worthwhile to check it out, given its accessibility with the MRT Circle Line.
