SRT’s The Little Company Presents The Nightingale!

“The Nightingale” is a famous Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale about a Chinese emperor who prefers the tinkling of a bejeweled mechanical bird to the song of a real nightingale. When the Emperor is near death, the nightingale’s song restores his health. The story has been adapted to opera, ballet, musical play, television drama and animated film all around the world.

SRT’s The Little Company (TLC) continues its 2014 season with a new original children’s musical, adapted from this well-loved tale.  With book and lyrics by internationally acclaimed writer Mike Kenny and music by Singapore’s Young Artist Award winner Ruth Ling, this is a refreshing retelling of the plain looking, brown Nightingale that spellbinds the Emperor of China with her lilting birdsong. The Emperor captures and keeps her in a gilded cage for his daily entertainment, but alas, along with her freedom, the beautiful voice of the Nightingale is lost, and a singing mechanical bird replaces her.  Will the nightingale survive her days in captivity? Will she ever fly freely again? Bring your kids to join the Nightingale and friends in their quest for her freedom.

UK-based director Kate Golledge, who previously helmed TLC’s shows Fantastic Mr Fox and Red Riding Hood, says “I’m looking forward to coming back to Singapore for the third time and working with this brilliant team on The Nightingale. I think the kids will enjoy the pop-music approach to the story we are taking with this production.”

What’s exciting is that audiences will also enjoy the opportunity to watch The Nightingale 夜莺 being performed in Mandarin from 18 September to 11 October 2014. The story could not be better suited to the job, especially since it’s a classic Chinese tale. We’ve decided to bring Dana to watch the Chinese production in September, anything to make the learning of Mandarin come alive!

  25. Ugly Duckling was my girl’s first theatre experience and she loved it and still remember it till today.
    The Nightingale will definitely be as nice too! She will love it!

  27. My daughter and I still remember our first date where I brought her to watch Ugly Duckling. She was initially afraid of the slightly darkened theatre but subsequently engrossed in the show.
    She has grown to love theatre shows since then and will surely love to watch Nightingale!
