‘What does having a car mean to you?’ For most of us salaried folks in Singapore, it is a significant financial commitment to own and maintain a car.
So, why did we decide to own a car especially since Singapore’s public transport is rather reliable? Here are some of our personal reasons summarized in this acronym:
Solace: Our car is our solace…especially before and after work. I remembered years back when I first started work, the car was an all important place where I can seek solace from the day’s noise, stress and activities. It’s the private space where I can collect my thoughts and compose myself after a long day of hard knocks. In the mornings when I go to work, driving gives me the space to be still, refocus and make some prompt decisions for the day ahead. It is in the car that I sometimes pray and spend quiet time before everything manic ensues.
Emergencies: If nothing else, our car have been invaluable for this reason. During family emergencies, time is of the essence and having a car has proven to be indispensable for bringing us quickly to attend to any family emergencies whether in Singapore or Malaysia.
Events: Our car has brought us to events far and near, quickly and safely, rain, haze and shine. It has helped to shave significant amount of time off waiting and commuting. It has also brought us to some far-flung places in Singapore where it would not have been easy to travel to and back especially with kids in tow.
Songs, Conversations and Significant Moments: The car is a place where family members to catch up on what’s happening in our day. We spend quite a bit of time in the car going from one place to another, one event to another so we spend these driving times reconnecting with each other through singing – oldies, children’s songs, bible songs and listening to audio books. Our daughter Dana was introduced to many classic singers whom we love because of car rides! Conversations are aplenty too. We intentionally do not put a screen in our car for this reason: car trips are for catching up because once we reach the destination, we’d all be preoccupied.
I also use our occasional car washing sessions to bond with my daughter, like how my own late father did with me. From as young as 4 years old, I’ve involved her in the washing of our car. It’s a great time where Daddy and Daughter can have some fun bonding while doing the chore and getting wet along the way. You’d be surprised that there are good life’s lessons (such as prioritizing, attention to details etc.) to impart to our children from the act of car washing!

Safety and Efficiency:
Like most Singaporeans who own cars – this ‘luxury’ is now seen as quite the necessity. Moreover as a family man, I use my car to ferry my wife and kids around day in and out. Having a safe and reliable car is important which is why we’ve only so far owned continental cars which largely have been reputed to have higher safety standards.
Due to the high cost of owning a car, it is imperative that the fuel we use protects the car and keeps it in tip-top condition. For me, I’m a 2nd generation Shell user who can testify to the high standards of Shell fuel.
Good enough for F1 cars, good enough for our cars.
Last month, Shell has launched an improved formulation of their Shell V-Power range of fuel. Named “Shell V-Power Nitro+“, this latest generation of performance fuel is enhanced with 25% more friction reducer* designed to instantly reduce friction in critical engine areas hence helping the engine deliver more power to the wheels. Its unique double action formula also actively cleans and protects vital engine parts to restore your car’s performance.
Shell V-Power Nitro+ is formulated to prevent the build-up of power-robbing inlet valve deposits and help remove any that have been left behind by other fuels. This turns the engine more freely, helping your engine to breathe easily and aids in the transfer of energy from the fuel to the wheels more efficiently.
Even more interesting is that the race fuel used by Scuderia Ferrari contains 99% of the same type of compounds found in Shell V-Power Nitro+ fuel! Now we can experience the same fuel that powers Scuderia Ferrari in our everyday drive. Cool!
