“We loved it Mommy, we wish it wouldn’t end!”
This review was contributed by our eldest daughter who accompanied her brother to enjoy a musical from a Disney animation feature which like many kids her age then, grew up with – FROZEN.
My parents had two tickets for Frozen the Broadway Musical, and we were debating on who should come along when they suggested that I watch it with Buddy. Before I knew it, we had braved the manic evening traffic and were seated in Sands Theatre waiting for FROZEN, the Broadway Musical to start. While waiting, we could spot the crowd, kids and parents included, high in anticipation for the first Disney Musical debut since the relaxing of pandemic rules!
If seeing Princesses Elsa, Anna and the comical Olaf along with Kristoff and his side-kick reindeer Sven in the flesh is not reason enough to catch the Musical live in Singapore, here are a few other reasons why you should not miss it!
5 reasons why you should watch Frozen, the Broadway Musical.
- Elsa Comes to Singapore – ONLY Singapore.
Yes, Singapore is the only South-East Asian stop for Elsa and her subjects of Arendelle from Disney’s Frozen, the hit Broadway Musical. So, don’t be left out in the cold from being mesmerized by this world-class musical right on home ground.
For all our effort rushing to the theatre on a weekday night after school, Buddy and I were rewarded when we saw Arendelle and all our favourite Frozen characters come to live right before our eyes.
- The Songs, Iconic Songs!
Despite what it says, honestly, we couldn’t “Let it go”. In fact, we loved hearing the iconic songs sung LIVE! Buddy’s favourite is, “Do you want to build a Snowman” whereas I can’t stop singing along to “For the first time in Forever” and “Love is an Open Door.” When those iconic tunes were belted out, the audience especially the little kids were all singing along! So cute!
The same folks who wrote ‘Let it Go’ wrote 12 new songs specially for this Musical. These new songs such as “Hans of the Southern Isle.” “What do you know about Love”, “Dangerous to Dream” and “Monster” are nice too.
I nearly forgot to mention, the tunes are all accompanied by LIVE orchestra musicians performing from the pit. Really elevates the audio-visual experience!
- Welcome to Arendelle!
One of the reasons why we love watching a Musical is the beautiful backdrops. In Frozen the Broadway Musical, we were transported right to magical Arendelle and Elsa’s Ice Castle adorned with all that crystals! It was indescribably beautiful.
The spectacular lighting and sets were the brainchild of a stellar team of Tony Award winning designers. Arriving in 26 ship containers (26!), the huge backdrops along with 440 costumes, endless shoes and props are as good as what you’ll see in Broadway and West End.
My parents told us that many of the costumes were painstakingly hand sewn, including Elsa’s and Anna’s dresses. Elsa’s Ice-queen dress had 14,000 pieces of Swarovski crystal on it and weighs about 20kg!
- World-Class Cast and Crew
The cast of Frozen the Broadway Musical was truly outstanding. Acting as Elsa is Jemma Rix , one of Australia’s most prominent leading ladies of musical theatre. She is best known for her portrayal of ‘Elphaba’ in Wicked (another of my fav musical!), which toured throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia to sold-out shows. Jemma’s powerhouse vocals was absolutely invigorating.
Taking the role of Anna is Sarah O’Connor who hails from the original West End cast. Her acting was top-notch and her chemistry with Jemma was so palpable. Seeing Elsa and Anna in person on stage was such a treat for Buddy and me!
Aside from the two sisters, the other two iconic characters that brought the musical to life would be Olaf and Hans. These 2 were played by Matt Lee (Olaf), an actor who has starred in stage and screen productions all over the world for the last 25 years and Thomas McGuane who acted as Hans. Even my parents agreed Thomas was so good-looking and it seemed he stepped out from the Frozen animation movie! Uncanny!
Aside from them, the rest of the cast were so talented, delivering the songs, dance and scenes with perfect pitch and so much energy. Together they make the musical such a great screen-to-stage adaption of the classic Disney animation.
- That Special Connection
FROZEN the animation movie took my world by storm when I was just a mere 5-year-old girl back in 2013. I recalled fondly that my parents threw me a magical ‘Frozen’ themed 5th birthday party back then with me dressed in Elsa’s dress. Now 10 years later, I’m turning 15 but still so happy to relive the magic and memories of FROZEN with my 9-year-old brother. Talking about Buddy, even though it was past his usual bedtime, he was so riveted that he didn’t blink once!
To conclude, I would really urge everyone to watch Frozen the Broadway Musical before it ends its run in Singapore on 19 March 2023. It is a fantastic musical will help siblings, family members and even friends across generations make that special connection over the heart-warming story of two siblings learning to love and appreciate each other and overcome challenges together.
For that, FROZEN the Broadway Musical will always be special in our hearts.
