Celebrate February – the month of Valentine, with your Valentine by reliving the glamour and glitter of early Twentieth century Chicago complete with an 11-piece live jazz band set against a story of love, betrayal, deceit and ‘All that Jazz’ in between, brought to you in a world-class act by an award-winning UK cast.

This multi-award winning musical (and its movie version) have won awards including six Tony Awards, one Grammy, 6 Academy Awards on top of packing theater halls in Broadway and West End to nightly standing ovations.
Our post will share with you our thoughts and the ‘ABC’ of why you should not miss this Musical plus bite-sized synopsis.
All That Jazz – A first-hand Experience…from a ‘purist’ :
I’m writing this on the very night I got back. For me, some experiences are so unforgettable that I just have to pen my thoughts and feelings down and this is one of them.
As a musical lover, you can’t get a more ‘purist’ experience then Chicago. It helps also that the story is set in the early 20th century when musical theatre itself was born.
The purist in me loves the fact that there was virtually no fancy props or set changes, nor any elaborate costumes. It was pure talented singing, acting, dancing and live orchestra music that carried the entire musical through. I love musicals precisely because of this and it is in musicals that the most talented artistes are found. And for this production, they proved me right again!
A for Acting
The acting was top-class with a casting that seemed to perfectly personify the characters they were playing:
Lindsey Tierney’s Roxie, with her small and petite frame was perfectly casted as Roxie. Her stature complemented her acting in bringing out the innocence, vulnerability and cheekiness of her character.
Genevieve Nicole’s Velma exuded class. With her height and flair she carried Velma right to the T. The timbre and texture of her voice coupled with her energetic dance moves transported us back to the hey days where Vaudeville ruled the stage.
Matthew Goodgame IS Billy Flynn….that’s all I can say. The first time I met him during the media preview, he did not need much convincing to the media that He IS Flynn in the flesh! With chiseled good looks and acting that personified the slick, suave and silver-tongued lawyer, the audiences lapped-up every scene he carried. Goodgame IS Flynn. See it to believe it!
B for Band
The added bonus here would be the 11-piece band. Nothing beats hearing music performed live. Here right smack on stage the band brought us back to the early years of finger-snapping and feet-tapping musical genre of swing, jazz and ragtime.
Added to that are the award-winning songs. This musical doesn’t only have one iconic tune but virtually every track can stand on its own as a classic. Right from the opening track of ‘All that Jazz’ to ‘When you’re good to Mama’ to ‘Cellophane man’ track after track the toe-tapping, finger-snapping melodies leave audiences humming and whistling the tunes long after they were performed and to have them performed live….What a treat!
C for Choreography
The dancing was tack-sharp in their synchronizing yet smooth enough to exude the sexy, sultry nature of the early Vaudeville performances. In short, it was cabaret, swing, jazz concert and live theatre all rolled into one. Best of all, there were no complicated sets or costume changes to distract audiences from the momentum of the musical. Perfect!

“Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer with ambitions of Vaudeville stardom, who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.
Chicago for the ‘Sophisticated’ Adult (To impress your date):
Given that it’s Valentine season, if you want to impress your date with a ‘deeper’ analysis of the musical…here’s a possible analogy. 🙂
Though set in the 1920s, the underlying story of CHICAGO the Musical, is still very much relevant to today’s context, particularly so in this age of social media where ‘image manipulation’ – letting others see only what we have painstakingly curated to portray on our social media accounts (i.e. Instagram, FB, Pinterest etc…) dominates the psyche of the modern society. In fact, pivotal to this revelation, to me, was when Amos (Roxie’s husband) sang his tune – ‘Mr. Cellophane’ – revealing the sad and cruel truth where being a good, honest, humble and well, transparent person, doesn’t always pay. Rather, it was Flynn, the shrewd, mercenary lawyer who eventually gets the last laugh, simply because he knew how to put up a good pretense and manipulate the media to achieve his goals. Quite telling of our society even now huh?
CHICAGO is a stunning musical filled with social satire, intrigue, love, betrayal, rivalry and friendship; a pageant of music and dance that adroitly shifts between reality and fantasy, as Roxie Hart’s world moves from prison to the courtroom to the stage. Be sure to catch it!

I watched this musical as a student when I was volunteering with St John’s Ambulance! Mr Cellophane is my favourite song – it’s tragic and funny at the same time.
Yes it was. Sad that it seems that being all that ‘transparent’ didn’t quite pay for poor Amos and that people believe what they are made to see. A sad reality of life sometimes.
