“Ergonomics is about your furniture and tools fitting you and not the other way around.”
Underrated. Overlooked.
Recently at a shopping trip to prepare my kids for the next schooling year, I was taken by surprise at how busy it was inside Ergoworks. It was filled with people from all walks of life. Even more surprising was how wide and holistic the range of products they cater for.
One aspect of health we tend to overlook however is their spinal joint health. Spinal and joint ailments can be just as detrimental to a child’s health since it can affect their mobility for the rest of their lives. We started to take a keen interest when our daughter entered Primary 1. Now that she is going on to Primary 5 we felt a need to revisit this as her school load will not get any lighter.
Take a peek at the range of holistic solutions Ergoworks offer:
Myth about School Bags:
Throughout all primary school life thus far we realize one of the main factors that affect her spinal joint health is the weight of her school bag. On this, here are some myths to debunk:
1. It’s just about books: No. A child carries more than just books to school. These things can seriously add weight to the school bag. These include water bottles, lunch and snack boxes (there’s a snack break for students in addition to recess), pencil cases, colour pencils, art folios and for some, even sporting equipment. To make things worse, parents and family members are not allowed into school to help our young kids.
2. It’s the quantity: No. It’s never about how many books your child carries. It’s about how thick and heavy those books are!
3. It’s always stable: No. Things that our kids carry need to be put properly in their bags. If they jiggle around inside the schoolbag while our kids are walking, it would affect their balance and may affect their spinal joint health.
4. It’s all the same: No. Not all school bags are created ‘equal’. In fact, not all kids have the same physical sizes and weight! A January child and a December child in the same classroom, their physical development is nearly a year apart.
5. They will grow to be strong: Yes and no. Yes, the kids will grow up physically stronger but no, they may not grow up physically correct if their spine, joints are not developed correctly. In fact, it may affect their mobility and make them more prone to physical ailments such as risk of slipped disc much later on in life.
Intrigued and Educated:
So we got educated by the friendly sales staff, Winston at Ergoworks Marina Square while the other staff attended to a crowd of other customers comprising of families with kids, pregnant ladies, busy young professionals and retirees. All keen on maintaining and improving their spine and joint health.
For a good ergonomic kids’ school bag, we learnt that:
1. School bags should have easily adjustable straps that the kids can adjust to fit their height and weight.
2. School bags should have extra padding and cushioning fully aligned with our child’s body.
3. School bags should have compartments within so that books and other belongings like water tumblers and pencil cases can be properly strapped to ensure they do not move around and add weight.
4. Parents should consider also the following strategies to minimize the load in a child’s school bag:
- Train your child to organize themselves using their timetable so that they bring only what is necessary.
- Buy a separate folio to keep your child’s drawing blocks and folders. These bulky and odd shaped items take up unnecessary space in the school bag.
- Teach your child the importance of proper posture care. Better still if parents can complement their lives with ergonomic furniture.
Towards a Holistic Spine and Joint Health at Home:
In addition to school bags, it was heartening to see that the store carry a full range of ergonomic products to support proper spine and joint care for everyone in the family, from kids to adults. The premise of these furniture and lifestyle items is that they should conform to our bodies and not the other way around. After all, we didn’t create our bodies but we can certainly curate the items we use daily to support our body’s everyday function.
These items include:
• Study desks and chairs that are designed to suit our kids’ height and usage needs as they grow.
• We tried their Duorest Ergonomic Chairs and were very surprised to find out how much support they give. They were incredibly comfortable yet structurally strong.
• Beds and pillows are equally important in helping with spine and joint care. It’s no surprise since we spend about one-third of our day resting and recharging on our beds. Ergoworks offers customizable bedding density to support individual weight and body sizes for maximum support.
• Accessories such as Keyboards, Mouse and even their Nano Ion Water Bottles can also help to enhance family overall health.

My child is 8 and has never had an ergonomic school bag. My child will be carrying the school bag on the back for quite some time, especially on days when we take the public transport. Moving up to the next level/grade in school, there will be an increase in the number of books and files to carry. Hence, an Impact Ergonomic School Bag will help my child maintain the correct posture.

Thanks for the insightful write up on the importance of choosing a school bag for our little kids. It is very important not to overstrain our child’s bag by overloading the schoolbag. Otherwise it will jeopardize their spinal health. Having a good posture is also important to protect my daughter’s back. I will definitely share this useful tips to my child and my friends who have children.

My kids are 6 and 3 yrs old. My eldest will be entering primary 1 next year and hence the search of a good, ergonomic school bag for him. Their school books are notoriously heavy and I want him to take care of himself by providing a good quality school bag as well as taking care of his spine as he grows up.
It would be awesome to win this!
