Singaporeans love Japanese food and culture. In fact, Japan is undeniably one of the all-time most popular travel destinations among Singaporeans. Our family has been to Japan thrice and we’re headed back there again this December. For all of us Japan lovers, there is a chance for us to discover more of Japan right here in Singapore!
In celebration of the Singapore-Japan 50 (SJ50) anniversary, Sunstar, a company with Japanese origins, is presenting the first Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition next week (20 to 24 October 2017).
A. Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition in Singapore
Date: 20 to 24 October 2017 Friday to Tuesday
Venue: The Luxe Art Museum, Dhoby Ghaut Singapore (6 Handy Road, #02-01, Singapore 229234)
The exhibition, hosted by Japan Calligraphy Art Academy (Nihon Shodo Bijutsuin, one of Japan’s oldest calligraphy art institutes) will display about 60 pieces of curated masterpieces across four categories:
1. Sino-Japanese ideograms (“kanji”)
2. Japanese syllabary (“kana”)
3. New calligraphic art
4. Seal carving
At the exhibition, visiting calligraphers from the academy will hold invigorating calligraphy performances and also provide opportunities for visitors to learn and practice calligraphy. The performances will take place daily from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. (except for October 25). Admission to the exhibition and performances are FREE for the public. Visitors will also receive an exclusive calligraphy art gift and a lovely Sunstar goodie bag while stocks last.

In addition to the Calligraphy Exhibition, Sunstar is also organizing a series of hands-on workshops and events to bring Japanese calligraphy and culture to the heartland communities of Singapore. It’s always interesting to learn about another culture. Educational and immersive events, perhaps for adults and families with older kids? I’m not sure whether my kids would enjoy these activities at this stage though.
David.S says
Hi Michelle, there’s the video screening and perhaps can have a go at the calligraphy or watch the performances with your kids. Thanks for dropping by!
