First off, I must say, of all the hotels we’ve stayed, this is the first one that that actually bundled free movie tickets with the room! With that, the Rendezvous Hotel sets the tone for their couple getaway unapologetic-ally! And we love it! Here’s our staycation experience.
The ‘Gateway’
Whenever we drive down Bras Basah – one of Singapore’s prominent downtown roads, the hotel’s grand colonial façade would beckon as a gateway of sorts into Singapore’s downtown art precinct and that would not be too far from the truth.
The Rendezvous Hotel is housed in a heritage colonial building with a history stretching back to Singapore’s pre-independence days. This makes it one of the few hotels in the city that have seen Singapore’s birth from a colonial outpost to its tumultuous infant days and now to its renaissance as a modern multicultural metropolis.
However, even as times change, the vicinity of the hotel has always remained a precinct for the arts and academia. Today, the hotel is flanked by the city campus of the Singapore Management University on one end and not far, an eclectic variety of art studios and art schools. In fact, the Singapore Art Museum and the National Museum are both less than 5 minutes walk from the hotel. In short, it is the perfect hotel to soak in this rich art-academia aspect of Singapore’s history while enjoying the best of what modern Singapore has to offer, including shopping and entertainment.

The Rendezvous Experience
Upon entering the lobby of this art-inspired heritage hotel, our visual senses were greeted by some intriguing sculptures and art pieces. How unique!
Art-inspired
We found out later that the hotel has another unique way of preserving a special part of its heritage – by adopting an art-inspired theme throughout its decor. In fact, certain floors were designated different art themes. For e.g Peranakan, Performing Arts etc…and their rooms on those floors would be decorated to follow the themes. Our Club room with the Performing Arts theme had quotations, even furniture items that relates to the Performing Arts. How appealing! The room was cosy and comfortable with plush furnishings that entice us to linger in the room just a little longer!
After a quick and hassle-free check in, we lounged at the hotel’s Club Lounge to enjoy some light afternoon snacks and drinks. This privilege comes with the Weekend Getaway Package. The Club Lounge is quiet and cosy, giving a good view of city skyline. The modern art décor stimulated our visual senses and certainly makes for good conversation. One special feature to note would be the curtains – which are printed with the city skyline of Singapore! Apparently, in case the skyline can’t be seen clearly (e.g. on rainy or hazy days), the curtains would be able to compensate for it! How special! At the lounge, we used the free WiFi to choose a late-night movie at the nearest Golden Village Cinema for our post-dinner movie date, courtesy of the hotel!
The Pampering
As part of the package, we were then treated to an exquisite couple Thai massage by the in-house service provider. For the next 50 minutes, we immersed in an invigorating experience by the Thai masseuse from Ayuthaya, the Royal Spa. The rest of the afternoon was ours to spend in the comfort of our room. What then could draw us out from the luxurious comfort of our Club Room? Well, it was the selection of evening drinks and canapés in the Club Lounge followed thereafter by a chance to stroll around the hotel to appreciate the art pieces that adorn this heritage hotel.
At the lobby, we met the friendly duty Manager who took time to explain to us that these art pieces are changed once every few months to give the hotel interior a refreshing update and these art pieces are masterpieces by local Singapore-based artists! There were also art pieces installed at the waiting areas of each floor. True to the hotel’s heritage, this is certainly a novel way the hotel promotes and supports local art.
After that brief walk, we were famished. We chose to dine at hotel’s award-winning Straits Café. A wide selection of food awaited us. Everything from succulent fresh oysters, large tiger prawns to their popular laksa. In addition to the main courses, there were a large variety of cakes and desserts but the one that really took the ‘cake’ (pun intended) was whatever that we saw in the durian dessert chiller – durian pengat, durian puffs and their durian cakes. They were simply not to be missed!
The Tickets
After dinner, we took a stroll to the nearest Golden Village Cinema nearby at Plaza Singapura to catch a late night show. The 10 minute stroll was a welcome change to having queue for car park at the cinema. It was quite a special feeling knowing that when our movie ended, we’re returning to a clean crisp luxurious hotel room not too far away. What a way to extend the already special day.
The next day, we decided to enjoy a quiet breakfast together. So instead of the joining the rest of the hotel at the Straits Kitchen, we had our breakfast at the Club Lounge – yet another privilege of staying in the club room. The selection of breakfast items were a tad limited but sufficient for us to start the day on a healthy note while enjoying each others’ company.
The Late Check-out
The late check-out option of the Weekend Getaway Package was truly a blessing. Rather than rushing off to pack and then check-out soon after breakfast, we lazed at the hotel’s Bali-inspired poolside which is perched above the busy Bras Basah street, far from the maddening crowd below.
After a swim, we took advantage of the proximity to the Singapore Art Museum (just next door!). How special that feeling to be able to enjoy each others’ company while appreciating some local art and historical artifacts as a couple.
The Moments and the Memories
It was a bitter-sweet feeling as our stay at the Rendezvous came to a close. We were thankful for this short 1 night’s anniversary stay at this gem of a hotel right in the city. Just like how it has made a mark in Singapore’s history, the Rendezvous Hotel has certainly made an indelible impression with the wonderful moments it has given to this pair of busy working parents.

I really like the idea of free movie tickets.
With the price that you have stated, I don’t think I’m able to get so many freebies at any hotel with the same standard nearby!
I shall plan for a stay for my wedding anniversary since I have hold my wedding dinner there “n” years ago!
David.S says
Wow! That would be so meaningful Lawrence! Hope you can experience it soon!
Meeningfully says
This sounds soooo good and affordable with all that’s thrown in. I was just thinking we should do a staycation soon and this came up. I believe the old rendezvous was a little dated, and this sure gives the hotel a bit more “class”. Love how the whole stretch of road is all so artsy starting from SOTA. Thanks for sharing David!
David.S says
We love to share wonderful experiences. Glad you found it useful. Go check it out and give yourselves that arty vacay!

oh wow it sure has changed quite a bit! My dad loved the Peranakan food they used to (still?) serve there. Considering what is included, that’s a very good value-for-money staycation package!

Hi Ai, the Peranakan food you’re referring to would be the Rendezvous restaurant that has since moved to another mall but the Straits Cafe’s wide range of food would sure to spoil any guests! Yes, the staycation was a memorable break!
Evangeline Yang says
I only been to the Teo Heng. Never thought it is so nice inside. I am itchy for a getaway esp when I saw free flow cocktail. Thanks for the lovely photos. =)

Looks more like an art gallery than a hotel!
Love the central location 🙂

Love this “gateaway”! Have a completely different view of it now that I’ve seen the chic and trendy interior. Used to go there for their famous curry but it’s not there anymore. Great to know the hotel changes the art pieces frequently!
