My daughter ‘drove’ me around today. Round and round. She was steering the Go Kart and negotiating the bends, avoiding the kerbs and other cars with me, seated by her side controlling the accelerator and brakes. I had not expected it but thanks to Kartright Speedway, Dana had her first taste of driving a Go Kart and she absolutely LOVED it. Apart from the Skyline Luge@Sentosa, Go Karting now ranks highly on one of our favourite parent and child bonding activities!
Our 1st Daddy and Child Go Kart Experience…something we’ll remember for a long time!
Kids Can Drive Too?
Yes, they do! Kids (5 and above) would be happy to know they CAN drive a GoKart. For kids below 10 years old and below 1.4m, they have to ride with a parent (or an adult) on a Twin Go Kart. If they can reach the steering wheel, we can let them have a go at steering the kart while the adult safely controls the accelerator and brakes. The max speed for the twin Go Kart is 30 km/h.
The Yellow 2-Seater Go Kart vs the Red Single Seater…
No license also can drive…safely:
Yes, for those without a driver’s license, you can drive a Go Kart at a limit of 30 km/h – same speed limit as the Twin Go Karts but trust me, in a kart so small and open to the elements, 30 km/h is actually quite a thrill!
There is a briefing at the start of our Go Kart experience but it is quite easy to operate: Right pedal (Green) to accelerate and Left Pedal (Red) to stop. There are no gears and the low CG of the car ensures that your kart won’t flip over.
The track is wide enough to accommodate a few Go Karts simultaneously. When we were there, there was a group with seven Go Karts and we were still able to maneuver safely and enjoy our drive. In fact, it’s when there are other Go Karts around that makes the whole Go Karting experience more thrilling!

How about experienced drivers?
Experienced drivers who have a valid driver’s license can opt to drive a Go Kart that goes up to 50 km/h. Solo. Although it seems like just 20 km/h more than the inexperienced drivers but it packs quite a punch – imagine being able to make turns at higher speed, overtaking tighter and swifter (Yes! I loved it!)
The closest I can get to an F1 action…
Is it safe?
Granted that any outdoor activity has its risks, Go Karting is actually very safe. There are strict rules that each driver has to comply with (given at briefing) and spectators have to comply with track-side rules as well. Staff are nearby to ensure that these rules are complied with for added safety.
The kart itself have extensive wrap-around bumpers that ensure that any bumps or scrapes along the drive would keep the drivers safe. Besides, every driver and passenger is seated deeply enclosed within a sunken chassis to ensure no one gets ‘flipped’ out. The kart’s design with a low center of gravity (CG) also ensures that under normal karting conditions, your kart will not flip over. Drivers are also required to wear a helmet (available onsite) and covered shoes.
Helmets for all sizes…
How long is each session?
Each session at Kartright Speedway is 10 minutes long. That 10 minutes gave us more rounds than what we actually bargained for – at least about 5 to 7 laps. Of course, this depends on how fast one drives. For us, it was our very first time Go Karting and we felt exhilarated…in some sense, addicted to the adrenaline it gives! There are attractive packages offered by Kartright Speedway that offer multiple sessions to satisfy your thrill. Believe me, you will crave for more.
Overall Experience:
Our 1st Go Karting experience exceeded my expectations. I particularly liked it because of the following reasons:
– It’s fun: It provides unique outdoor bonding opportunity for parent and child and put into practice teamwork (especially being able to let the parent demonstrate first then subsequently let the child ‘drive’ by controlling the steering wheel).
– It’s safe: It gives children (and non-drivers) the simulation and thrill of ‘driving’ in a safe environment.
– It’s empowering: Drivers have absolute control over their karts and can maneuver it with ease.
– It’s thrilling: There can be healthy ‘competition’ where we can compare each others’ timings displayed on a monitor at the end of each session.
We’ll be back!
