Post Alert! Tons of Tips for Families headed to TOMAMU:
This is an extension of our first post on our recent unforgettable winter trip to Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU with two lively young kids in early December 2017!
When travelling with children, there are so many things we have to pack and prepare. It gets more challenging when you travel in Winter! In order not to forget these precious lessons we’ve learnt from our trip, we compiled them in 5 VLOGs complete with itinerary and tips!
1. Getting to TOMAMU by Train:
We took the train straight out from New Chitose Airport and made it to Tomamu JR Station where we hopped onto their free hotel shuttle.
2. Holiday in Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU – Day 1
Our first official day in TOMAMU where we rented our ski gears right after checking-in. Why?
- Here’s sharing what we did on our first day:
- Lunch at the newly opened Hotalu Street
- Renting the ski gears, and ski equipment etc.…one day before skiing.
- Having fun in the snow around the resort
3. Holiday in Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU – Day 2
By any account, today was exceptionally unforgettable! Our 3 year old Buddy had his first ski lesson and the 9 year old daughter refreshed her skiing skills. But the excitement didn’t stop there! The activities we did in Day 2 included:
- First day of personal ski coaching for the kids.
- Snow mobiling!
- Indoor Mina Mina Beach!
- Onsen at Mina Mina Beach Complex. (Recommended!)
4. Holiday in Hoshino Resorts TOMAMU – Day 3
Our final day of activities here and it was a stunningly beautiful bluebird day. The activities we did were:
- More skiing
- Unkai Terrace
- Backcountry fun in the snow
- Christmas Cookie Baking in a Japanese barn
- Ice Village
5.Tour of Risonare Hotel’s Suite!
The Hoshino Resorts Risonare hotel is far less crowded and exudes a sense of luxury and calm. Plus, the suite is HUGE and comes complete with a large Jacuzzi and mini sauna. Perfect for families. Have a look.

Hi there,
I am planning a ski vacation this december and wonder if tomamu resort or ki niseko is a better option for my family?
we are new to skiing and my 2 kids are 4 and 7. thanks!!
David.S says
Hi Connie. The two resorts are quite different and unique in their own ways, although Hoshino Resorts Tomamu does have virtually all the amenities and diverse activities well-within the same compound / vicinity serviced by a regular shuttle . I’ll write to you with my thoughts soon. Thanks for dropping by!

Hi!
I am planning a trip to Hokkaido this December. 1st to 12th Dec. Do you have a recommended itinerary ? I am looking at doing both rutsusu and tomamu. How do you get around covering both resort in 1 vacation?
HL says
Hi, can you share how you book the coach for the kids ?
Angie. S says
Hi Hui Leng
thanks for dropping by our blog. You can book the ski classes for kids here: https://www.snowtomamu.jp/winter/en/ski/academy/ If the reservations for Dec’18 season are not open yet, do check back again in June.

Hi,
On board the train from Chitose airport to Tomanu, do they show the upcoming train station name in English on the train? I’m worried at i may miss the stop.
Thanks.
David.S says
Hi Melidy, the trains which we were on made the announcement of the next destination in English. Good thing is also that the English name is a direct translation of the Japanese name – so they sound the same and you’ll hear the name of the place twice! Finally, the destination names in the stations are also in English, this would be your final check if you’re at the right station. A good tip would be to count the number of stops from the map in the station or on the train, that would be another way you ensure you get off the right stop. Hope it helps!

Hi may i know if there are already snow play activities like tubing, snow mobiling, sled in 1st week of dec? Seems like the websites all indicated such activities to b avai fr mid dec only. Tks.
David.S says
Hi Sinyee, yes…unfortunately most of these other snow activities do start from mid-Dec onwards, however this may be a general rule. In our case we found that the operators were already doing some sort of ‘soft launch’ of their winter activities hence we were lucky to have them include us. If you want to be safe then it would be good to plan your trip to coincide with mid-Dec onwards.
