Buddy turned 3 last Friday on 23 June 2017. Due to our Iceland trip, I did not have time to plan for his actual day celebration. By coincidence, Mommy Kai Lee, a Mom of 2 who bakes at CATivatingcakeandcupcake got in touch with us through our blog’s FB page. Since she comes highly recommended by our friend May (of A Million Little Echoes), I got acquainted with Kai Lee through whatsapp. Soon, I was won over by her enthusiasm and decided to outsource Buddy’s school celebration entirely to her. Buddy is at an age where he’s crazy about bulldozers, excavators and dump trucks. So I told Kai Lee to work around the construction theme and left for our vacation.
The good thing about engaging a dedicated home-baker like Kai Lee is that she took charge of everything, right down to the small details, as if it was her own son’s party. She not only conceptualized, baked, decorated the cakes and birthday favors, she also surprised us with a personalised cake topper for Buddy and brought her P1 daughter to assist with the party set up. So last Friday, we took time off from work, turned up at Buddy’s childcare empty-handed (well, except for the camera), ready to party!
Kai Lee’s cakes received thumbs up from the teachers and friends – I like it that they are moist, tasty and not cloyingly sweet. David was super impressed at how realistic the construction themed cake turned out. You should see how Buddy’s eyes lit up, he was so proud of his construction cake and literally beaming from ear to ear. When he was younger, he couldn’t quite comprehend the magic of birthdays but now that he does, I am so glad we threw him a school celebration worthy of the little charming young boy that he is.
I used to fret over kids’ birthday favors most. But this year, Kai Lee handled it seamlessly. When we stepped into Buddy’s class, his classmates were all super stoked! They were extremely pleased to go home with the balloon favors that came tied to a construction truck each. I spied kids from other classes looking on with a tinge of envy…That’s why I believe every birthday celebration (or for that matter, any celebration) should be accompanied by balloons!
So there you go, cakes and balloons, two simple ingredients for a magical 3rd birthday celebration in school. I’m so glad we succeeded in making our newly minted 3yr old feel so happy and special on his birthday!?
