This post reviews Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza and provides with tips and FAQs for the Singapore show.
“Jaw-dropping, Eye-popping, Breath-taking Circus!” – If I could sum up Cirque du Soleil’s latest show, ‘KOOZA’ in one headline, that would be it.
That is if I could….but honestly, we’re still pretty awe-struck after watching KOOZA last night. From the on-set of the 280 minute spectacle of impeccable, thrilling world-class acrobatics, right until we got home, the whole experience still had us mesmerized as we recounted our favourite segments to each other.
Cirque du Soleil needs no introduction. Since its inception in Quebec, Canada back in the early ’80s, Cirque is now synonymous with world-class acrobatic acts. Today, more than 160 million people have seen a Cirque act. As recently as 2016, there would be 18 different Cirque du Soleil productions being staged around the globe concurrently.
Here’s a sneak peek from the media preview:
KOOZA BY CIRQUE DU SOLEIL
KOOZA – in Sanskrit means “box”, “chest” or “treasure” harks back to Cirque’s circus tradition by combining two circus traditions – acrobatic performance and the art of clowning.
With acts ranging from death-defying ‘Aerial Hoops’ to breathtaking ‘Balancing on Chairs’, ‘High Wire’ and the finale act, ‘Teeterboard’ where quintuple artists fling through the air twisting somersaults and ending with the same stunt done 30 feet above the stage with single then DOUBLE metal stilts strapped to their legs. These and more spelling-binding, gravity-defying acts which left the audience dumbfounded and shrieking in wonder.
In between these mind-boggling acts under the iconic Grand Chapiteau were performances that made us go, “How did they do that?” The ‘Contortion’, ‘The Charivari’ – a human pyramid act and the ‘Wheels of Death’ lend a nail-biting twist to classic circus acts, mesmerizing audiences in signature Cirque style – sleek showmanship, precise synchronization coupled with impeccable mastery… We gasped in disbelief as the seemingly impossible stunts are played out right in front of our eyes. Needless to say, rapturous applause thundered, act after act.
The classic just got better.
Just when you think classic circus acts are outdated, KOOZA pushes boundaries up many notches by challenging conventions, giving audiences unforgettable circus experiences which only Cirque du Soleil can deliver.
SYNOPSIS
KOOZA explores human connection in the world of duality – good and bad. The tone of the show is light, fun. It chronicles the journey of the characters as they discover the concepts of identity, recognition, fear and power.
The Trickster begins the show by bursting onto the scene in front of The Innocent – a naïve child-like character. The Innocent is brought through a journey which he encounters hilarious characters such as the King, the Heimloss, the Obnoxious and the affable Bad Dog. These encounters accompany him in the discovery of identity, recognition and power: an analogy perhaps of what life entails for each of us in our respective journey of discovery. The Innocent ends his journey with glee, happiness and a renewed sense of child-like awe…very much like the audience who left the Big Top yesterday night.
The Music:
Accompanying these astounding acts is Cirque’s very own live band complete with live singers whose ethereal voices lend an air of mystique and allure to the entire KOOZA production. Hearing the music played and sung LIVE and echoed through the iconic Big Top was a magical experience for the entire audience.
Standing Ovation:
Since it’s premier in April 2007, KOOZA has played to 7 million people worldwide. Now on Singapore’s shores for a limited time only (till 20 August 2017), KOOZA for us, is simply Cirque du Soleil’s BEST show ever. It is set to dazzle, mesmerize and stretch the imagination of adults and kids alike in the rare, childlike wonder, giving everyone whos enters the Grand Chapiteau a truly unforgettable experience that is unlike any other. The prolonged standing-ovation on opening night of KOOZA is strong testament to this fantastic production.
FAQs FOR FAMILIES:
Is it suitable for children?
Absolutely! It is perfect for children and the child in each of us! KOOZA is guaranteed to be a talking point at your dinner tables and in car rides long after it’s over! For younger children (perhaps ages 7 and below), parents may need to inform them that these acts are executed by professionals, under strict supervision and safety measures, they are not to be replicated at home. Comfy booster seats are provided by the venue for younger children. Just ask the friendly ushers.
Does my child need a ticket?
Children under 2 years of age may be admitted free of charge provided they do not occupy a seat (they must be seated on the lap of a parent or guardian). Children aged 2 years and above must purchase a ticket for admission. All children below 12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Are there ‘dark’ themes that may startle children?
There is a general sense of mystique but not foreboding or dark. Point to note is that after the interval, the ‘Skeleton Dance’ may seem slightly ominous but it was very quickly diffused by the clowns who never fail to bring the house down with their funny slapstick antics! The act following after – ‘Wheel of Death’, would surely leave the kids eye-wide in amazement.
What is the duration of the show?
The entire show lasts over about 2.5 hours including a 30-minute interval after the first hour. It started slightly past 8pm and ended at 10.30pm.
Are there toilets around?
There are rows of clean toilets outside the main tent. Given that the interval is 30-minute long, you can even take a brisk walk back to MBS to use the washrooms there and return in good time.
What else do I need to note?
* Weather: Apart from the main tent, the rest of the area is open air. This includes the waiting area for the washrooms. So if the weather seem unfavorable, it would be good to bring umbrellas along.
* Security : Do expect your bags to be checked and your body scanned with hand-held scanners.
* Box office queue: Go early to get your tickets. The box office opens at 6.30pm and the queue can get quite long after 7pm.
* Food and drinks: There are snacks, cold drinks and alcohol sold within the main Big Top tent. If you prefer a proper meal, you’re better off going earlier to grab a bite at Marina Bay Sands before the show.
* Attire: Dress in comfy clothes for the circus show. You need to climb some steps to reach your seats in the Big Top. Jeans, long pants recommended.

It was indeed an amazing show. My favourite bits were the Wheels of Death and the Contortionists. Yours?
It’s hard to choose…we loved every bit of it but perhaps The Wheels as well as the double high-wire act were the ones that kept us most at the edge of the seat!
A pity I could not join this event, circus under the Big Top is always exciting!
Nice captures!
cheers, Andy

Spectacular it seems to be! Lemme check when can I take my kids.
Great photos! Kids young and old would love this! Would love to bring my family along too!
This is fun and love the photos. It must be exciting watching them. Live.
Love the shots! Great photos there and looks amazing!
It is jaw dropping for sure! Your family is so blessed to have the sponsored tickets. I would really like to watch it with AJ too.
Is there a place where I can park the stroller of my baby? Will be watching it today with my husband and my baby.
Hi…there won’t be a place near your seats for the stroller but I’m sure if you tell the ushers there would be a place / cloak room for you to keep the stroller. Alternatively if you are driving, you can go early to park at the Wilson car park next door or at MBS South which is near the Big Top. Enjoy the show!
