Regret… kind of…
My hubby and I seldom feel like this but we leave this hotel with a slight tinge of regret.
“A what Museum?”
One of the regrets was that we did not spend enough time at the TeddyVille Museum. Honestly, David and I had trouble trying to prioritize the things we wanted to do on this jaunt of a trip back to Penang, his hometown.
TeddyVille Museum
For a start, not many hotels we’ve stayed boasts of a museum, let alone a Teddy Bear Museum.
Aside from a small section dedicated to the history of teddy bears, which was what we had expected, the rest of the TeddyVille Museum is an amazing collection of miniature and gigantic teddy bears depicting Penang’s unique historical and cultural identities.
The miniature teddy bears were exhibited in diorama-style. From the annual Penang Bridge Runs to the famous Kek Lok See temples to ubiquitous Gurney Drive hawker centers, the dioramas were very realistic and well made.
Dotted along the corridors are gigantic teddy bears dressed to reflect Penang’s local cultural life. The TeddyVille Museum is an excellent place for the whole family to deepen our appreciation of Penang. Everywhere you turn, there’s a fun holiday photo-op for the family.
Other ‘Distractions’
For this Penang trip, our sole agenda was for the kids to spend time with their paternal Grandma. Hence we left our itinerary free and easy. We looked around for a hotel where we can chill and enjoy lots of unhurried quality family time. The DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang was the perfect fit. At the time of our booking, it had just been awarded “2018 Best Family Resort in Malaysia & Best Leisure Hotel in Malaysia”.
The Family Suite:
The newly launched family suite, boasts of living room and 2 large bedroom (King and Twin). It is perhaps one of THE largest family rooms we have ever stayed in throughout our travels. Both rooms come with their own attached bathrooms and ours even comes with a floor to ceiling glass window which gave us unblocked breath-taking view of Straits of Malacca!
In the middle of the Family Suite is a spacious living and dining area. A comfortable sofa and a kitchenette added to the homely feel. With our relaxed agenda, we lounged in the living room every afternoon while the kids spent time with their grandma.
One of the highlights of the Family Suite is the huge balcony that wrapped the front of the living room and Master bedroom. We watched sunsets and sunrises with a commanding view right in the privacy of our hotel room. The kids even spotted wild monkeys on the treetops and an eagle soaring overhead one evening. What a treat it was!
The Kids Club
The Kids Club is a favorite even though the programme was simple. During our stay, Dana and Buddy enjoyed art and craft sessionsd as well as mock-tail making. There are also toys and books for the kids to self-entertain I like it that there are child-friendly toilet facilities within the Kids Club and the staff paid strict attention to hygiene.
The Pool and Waterplay Area
This was THE other place where we spent most of our time. The beautifully landscaped pool provided us countless hours of fun just splashing and swimming. The cabanas and man-made beach made-up for the real McCoy across the busy road which may be unsafe for kids due to the rocky terrain.
Next to the main pool is a colorful water play area for younger kids. Spotting a large water pail that crashes down every 7 minutes or so, along with 2 short slides. Parents can sit and wait at the faux grass patch nearby or at the cabana, which is a few steps away.
Having Breakfast at The Makan Kitchen
Wherever we travel, we always look forward to trying the local dishes. The hotel’s Makan Kitchen which serves up authentic Malaysian breakfast, which we can’t get enough of! This includes their Nasi Lemak and David’s personal favorite, roti canai and roti bakar (bread toasted over charcoal!).
The Makan Kitchen also has a dedicated kids’ buffet corner that carries a small selection of local biscuits, muffins, cereals, fruits and cupcakes for kids. The kids enjoyed the spread.
Ambience at the Makan Kitchen is relaxed. With the hotel’s beautiful pool just steps away, we enjoyed our alfresco breakfasts during our stay. Service at the Makan Kitchen, was always prompt, friendly and heartfelt.
Off to Town!
The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle service that departs twice daily to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town, 20 minutes’ drive away, to Gurney Drive and back to Batu Ferringhi. With this free shuttle, guests enjoy the convenience (and comfort) of going to town exclusively in the resort hotel’s own comfy passenger van.
Letter to the GM:
Service in the hotel complements the customer-centricity in your culture. Even though we arrived late from our flight (around 10pm), your staff’s sincere smiles as she presented us with DoubleTree’s signature warm chocolate cookies made our day! We also liked the cold fruit-infused water at the lobby while we waited to check-in. Such litte thoughtful gestures go a long way.
While we love the luxe Family Suite and the wonderful facilities, it was the warm hospitality we encountered that made our stay distinctive. This is not our first DoubleTree stay and dare I say, it will certainly not be our last. Thank you DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang and congrats on your award!

thanks for dropping by our blog. We flew via Scoot this recent trip and landed in Penang at 21.50hrs. As it was late, we booked hotel transfer directly with the DoubleTree Resort. For our day trips, we simply used the Grab app to book Grab Cars to bring us around. It’s been reliable and affordable.
If I do win, I intend to go during the year end holidays with my wife and 2 kiddos (7 year old boy, 4 year old girl). We have never been to Penang, and would like some recommendations as to which budget flights are good, which period to look out for, and food recommendations for the kiddos when in Penang!

Have been stayed in Double Tree Hotel in JB once with my ex bf (now husband) which we had a great and fun memory! The funny part was I get shock when the bathroom is transparent/see through, then I keep asking him leave the room whenever I need to use it, until I realized there is a curtain can cover the glass wall, but it was late to discover which makes both of us keep laughing the whole night. Hope to stay in Doubletree Penang as we have a plan to visit Penang either Christmas or Chinese New Year. Can’t wait to try Penang food soon. By the way, you all look great in photo and I’m sure all of you really enjoy much in the resort! I like the big bathtub anyway.

Penang is a beautiful places that a must visit. I love Penang Laksa, kuey teow, cendol and etc. After the full meal, don’t forget to visit Kek Lok si, 3d Musuem. For hotel definatedly Doubletree Hilton Penang whereby you will having a good sleep and at the same time enjoy their full facilities.

I would like to go Penang in August when my hubby is planned to finished his work project presentation or in Jan when we have 2 Jan birthday babies in the house, so that we can bring the kids out for a good break! I’ve been to Penang once but I’ve never had the chance to stay in such a beautiful hotel before. As we are always on a budget, we usually opt for a budget hotel for our stay. Kids grow up very fast and in just a blink of an eye, they would have turned into adults! It’s really important for us to bond with them while they are still young and I truly believe that travelling together in a family is a type of great bonding. Its another great reason to visit Penang together with family this time. It’s been almost 3 decades since my last visit. Time and memories have changed now that I have my family. Would love to enjoy a staycation outside Singapore that is so family-friendly.

December school holidays would be the best time to visit Penang due to the cooler weather, and a more ‘relaxed mentality’ due to the Christmas season.
I love Doubletree Resort by Hilton Penang for being so child-friendly by offering a plethora of indoor and outdoor activities for the kids. Besides, I love space, so the hotel definitely fits the bill! Moreover, with the award-winning title recently, all the more I feel like being their guest!
I cam down with food poisoning on my first trip to Penang (before I gave birth), so this round (which will be my 2nd trip) I hope to spend our stay at the Batu Ferringhi beach area, to relax and take it easy especially now with our active son.
