Just before the Christmas holidays ended, the hubby and I managed to visit this quaint little cafe which my Instagram pals have raved about since months back. It’s easy to see why many have fallen in love with La Ristrettos. It’s tucked away in a secluded spot at level 8 of the posh Novena Medical Centre (where Doctor for a Day was held). It offers a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle mall (Square 2) below it; it’s cosy and decorated rustically with lots of chic coffee memorabilia from around the world; there is serenity and greenery aplenty and most importantly, the coffees and food’s good and not exorbitant. Enjoying our morning cuppa at La Ristrettos feels as if we are in one of the artisan cafes in Melbourne…
What I find a pity here is that service is almost non-existent and icy. You place your orders at the counter looking at a huge wall menu, wait for your food and drinks to be served to you at the communal table and that’s it. The barista and wait staff make no attempts to make any small talk with you even though you are one of the two customers there on a Sat morn. A warm hello would certainly complement the homely interiors more. Perhaps there’s no need to, the place’s packed even before mid day, with patrons all hungry to have a bite from their small but extensive menu consisting of all day breakfast items, soups, salads, pastas, pastries and desserts. The hubby tried their Smoked Duck Breast and it was exquisite! My Florentine Croissant with Scrambled Eggs was just ordinary.
The next time you are in the vicinity or looking for an intimate place to catch up with old friends over coffee, or just desiring a new place for brunch, consider La Ristrettos. I hope we’ll get a chance for a return visit soon. I would love to try their pastas…
