They came… they saw… and they laughed ! Yes, the wildly popular and entertaining British series ‘Horrible Histories’ is now a live sketch comedy before our very eyes. Started more than ten years ago as a series of educational books to bring a lighter side to history, which then evolved into a highly popular TV series on Discovery Kids Channel, the creators now move on to a different platform, in the form of a live theatrical drama to bring the love of history to the masses.
Young historians in the making! |
Featured as part of this year’s Kids Fest, Horrible Histories is running two of its main-stay original classic – ‘Terrible Tudors’ and ‘Awful Egyptians’ till Feb 9th, 2014 at the DBS Arts Centre. Being a fan of the TV series and fresh from last year’s ‘Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb’ Exhibition at the Art Science museum, it didn’t take a wink for Dana to tell us she would love to watch ‘Awful Egyptians’ when she saw the advertisements.
Right from the get-go, the three-actor team pulled out all stops to give everyone an entertaining, energetic and engaging performance. There were the classic puns for the adults and the slapstick comedic acts for the kids. The effects were hilarious. They also threw in a song or two to liven up the atmosphere and create audience participation. We absoultely loved the number ‘I have nobody’ – referring to Isis’ search for her husband Osiris’ body along the River Nile.
When history meets comedy : Awful Egyptians! |
Facts, myths, names, dates about the world’s greatest civilization were interspersed between the comedic routine which has made the Horrible Histories franchise such a wildly popular one. To their credit, besides all the laughter, we DID learn a thing or two stepping away from the show when it ended.
It’s never easy to replicate historical facts into live theatre and kudos to the Kids Fest crew for delivering such an energetic, educational and engaging show for all ages to appreciate and enjoy. We will never see Egypt quite the same way again.
