Coming to our screens from November 13th is the latest Disney animation from the creative team that gave us Frozen, Wreck it Ralph and Tangle. Staying true to its comic tradition, Big Hero 6 not only is packed with fast paced action and excitement; it has loads of values and allegories that would make for meaningful family conversations thereafter.
Adapted from the Marvel’s range of anime comic of the same name, the film version, though less edgier in terms of its graphic illustration (hence more child-friendly), it still manages to keep its audiences glued at the edge of their seats as the story unfolds on how an orphaned teenage robotic genius sets out to avenge a personal loss (of his brother) with a motley bunch of 4 other nerdy friends and his affable ‘Personal Healthcare Assistant’ Baymax.
Without giving too much of the plot away, we walked away impressed at how this animation not only managed to bring across the timeless values of friendship and family, it also masterfully weaved in mature themes of emotional resilience, forgiveness and moral integrity into its plot – something most family-grade animation would stay clear of. With that, it sets itself in a good position to engage our children to talk about issues on ‘Doing the right things though others are not’ and ‘2 wrongs don’t make it right’ – perfect themes to explore with our pre-primary 6 year-old. Within the film are some poignant and emotionally-charged moments which pulled our heartstrings so you may need to manage your children’s emotions when they try to reconcile these feelings as the story unfolds on the big screen.
All in, it is a excellent film filled with many touching moments that offer families wonderful opportunities to bond and discuss about life-lessons. Don’t miss it!
