A Dinosaur Show?
“ This is good,” quipped the hubby as he was driving off after the show, his comment couldn’t be more different merely 120 minutes ago.
“ A dinosaur show? I hope it’s not cutesy. Dinosaurs are not cute, you know. We teach the kids the wrong thing if they go away thinking dinos are cute…” the self-professed ‘dino-expert’ in the family (aka my husband) grumbled while trying to negotiate the rush hour traffic on way to the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
“BBC”
“This LIVE Experience is based on the same award-winning BBC TV series which you like! You have the entire DVD set!” I justified. The mere mention of ‘BBC’ stopped his ranting. You see, our resident ‘dino expert’ absolutely loved the BBC Walking with Dinosaur series narrated by Kenneth Branagh.
Here are 5 reasons why our family thinks the “Walking with Dinosaurs – The Live Experience”, is worth the watch.
- Ultra Real
“ Do you know that T-Rex has feathers?” Daddy asked the kids, catching us unaware. True enough, the fearsome T-Rexes on the show has feathers, based on the latest scientific research. This recent discovery links these prehistoric predators to the docile birds of today and proves that they are the descendent of these prehistoric giants.
From the skin to the size, the gait and the sound, all the dinosaurs depicted are as true as Paleontologists can attest them to. Every detail of the show is carefully researched, down to the colours and skin texture of the dinosaurs. Their realism is stunning and it gets even more astounding when they come near…very near. It’s ultra real yet unreal.
- Engaging
Hosted and narrated by a fictional Paleontologist, the 100-min show has a simple yet intriguing storyline. Huxley, the Paleontologist takes audiences through the 200-million-year reign of the dinosaurs from existence till extinction, showcasing various landscapes where volcanoes erupt, colourful flowers bloom and fearsome forest inferno ultimately culminates in the massive comet responsible for the extinction of these prehistoric giants.
The hubby was relieved that while there was no song and dance items. Just pure impressive use of HD projections, sweeping soundtrack sand creative use of stage props. Walking with Dinosaurs – The Live Experience was actually quite engaging even for our 5 and 11 year-old who had their eyes peeled to every scene.
- Larger than Life
With 18 large live-sized dinosaurs roaming the confines of the Indoor Stadium, this alone is worth the ticket price. It’s an experience which no book nor screen can ever replicate. From the iconic T-Rex standing tall and fearsome at 7m and the largest of them all, the Brachiosaurus at 11m (almost 3-storey tall) and 17 m in length, coupled with excellent use of animatronics, robotics and live puppetry, these giants came to life right in front of our eyes and kept us all awestruck.
- Awesome Animatronics and Puppertry
The incredible realism in the movement of these awesome beasts can be credited to a team of highly skilled ‘Voodoo’ puppeteers who control the head and body movements separately while another controls the facial movements ranging from eyes to jaws etc. That is just one dinosaur. Imagine the team of these working in tandem flawlessly to make the dinosaurs come alive – walk, run, fight, eat etc. This is truly animatronics and puppeteering at its best.
- Highly Educational
The quality of the show has tremendous potential in educating our kids on natural history and paleontology but beyond that, it carries with it a deeper significance for the need for wildlife conservation with a deep reverence for mother nature, her beauty and the forces of nature which we need to reckon with if we do not heed the call to protect and preserve our earth.
Summary:
This is an awesome production. With its incredible realism, it inspires a deeper interest for natural history and a deep respect for nature and the earth which we all call home.
FAQs:
Is it suitable for young kids? This production should intrigue children from 3 and up. Due to the realism of the dinosaurs, along with the sound and light projections, it may startle younger toddlers. For preschoolers like our 5 year-old, it was truly eye-opening and entertaining.
How long is the show? The entire production, along with a 20-minute interval, lasts under 120 minutes.
Will it be boring if I don’t appreciate palaeontology or know much about dinosaurs? No. Its appeal is very wide with excellent attention to details, flawless movements and good story-telling.
