Homes with young children, especially those with toddlers who crawl and put everything in their mouths, should be chemical-free. While we teach our kids to practise good hygiene habits and strive to feed them with good nutrients to keep them in the pink of health, we sometimes forget that the chemicals we bring into the home (in the form of cleaning products) can do more harm than good. Washing liquids and detergents which we use daily (presumably to keep our homes and laundry free from dust and germs) but unknown to us, they gloss over the surface with layer of chemicals. These, if left un-checked can be ingested or inhaled by young children.
Therefore, as a semi-OCD Mom, it is almost like an endless search for cleaning products that are effective, affordable and safe for the family.
Method Home Products keep our homes clean and safe!
A friend introduced me to Method Home cleaning products a year ago and I was drawn to its nice packaging right away. Apart from the trendy packaging (in 100% biodegradable, recyclable bottles), Method products are non-toxic, do not give off harmful vapours and use high percentages of naturally derived ingredients (no parabens, bleach or ammonia and other harmful chemicals in the ‘dirty ingredients list’). If it’s not safe for people and the planet, Method doesn’t use it. Read more here.
A reader was concerned when she read that Method products contain ‘SLS’ and I found this information in the FAQ on their website which I hope can allay her fears.
Yes, we do use this particular ingredient, which is derived from coconut oil and used for its lathering and efficacy properties, in a number of our products at minute levels.
There has been some controversy over SLS being carcinogenic. SLS is a safe ingredient and has not been classified as a known, probable or even suspected carcinogen by either the International Agency for Research on Cancer (www.iarc.fr) or the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
When deciding to use SLS in some of our formulations, Method did a complete assessment of the environmental and health aspects of this ingredient, including tests for toxicity and biodegradability. Their findings showed SLS to be altogether safe in its intended usage, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and environmentally preferable.
As an animal lover, I am also pleased to find out that Method performs absolutely no animal testing on any of its products and does not contain any any animal by-products.
Method is a ‘Animal Cruelty-Free’ Company! Read more here.
If you do a comparison, Method products are less pricey than other eco-friendly cleaners in the market. I try to stretch my dollars even more by stocking up on essential Method products during it’s online sale.
Let me share 5 Method products which I would recommend for all households:
1. The Squirt + Mop Hard Floor Cleaner
Comes in two scents: Lemon Ginger and Ginger Yuzu S$6.50 per bottle
One of the most essential Method products for all homes. Try it to believe it. This Method ‘Squirt + Mop’ hard floor cleaner takes the pain out of mopping the floors. It’s fuss-free – just squirt and mop (no rinsing needed)! It saves time, saves water, cleans well, leaving a fresh lingering scent in the home. I’m amazed that it does such a great job every time regardless whether I’m mopping the bathroom floor, the living room marble floor or the kitchen ceramic floor. Ever since I started using this Method ‘Squirt + Mop’, I’ve stopped buying other floor cleaners! Method also carries a separate cleaner for wooden floors.
2. The All-Purpose Surface Cleaners
Comes in 3 scent: Cucumber, Fresh Lavender and Pink Grapefruit S$7.90 per bottle
We use this all-purpose surface cleaner a lot. It is suitable for table tops, counter tops, taps, sinks and even bath tubs. The cleaner is made from corn and coconut derived surfactants which break down dirt naturally, so every spray leaves nothing behind but a fresh scent and gleaming clean surface. Being nontoxic, I don’t have to rinse the surface after use so they are completely safe for the kids to touch after wiping. A tiny squirt keeps the area squeaky clean so the bottle goes a long way.
3. The Hand Wash Gel
Comes in 7 scents: Cucumber, Fig + Rhubarb, French Lavender, Mandarin-Mango, Pink Grapefruit, Waterfall and Sea Minerals. S$5.95 per bottle.
One of my favourite Method products – the naturally derived, triclosan-free, heavenly scented hand wash. I was drawn to the trendy, ergonomic tear dropped shaped bottle and its many delicious scents (and colours)! Dana has eczema so I am careful about changing from the usual antiseptic hand wash brands but after trying Method’s hand wash for a while, I was glad that there hasn’t been any outbreak of rashes and irritation. Frequent washing of hands each day make our cuticles very dry so this hand wash made from naturally derived ingredients prevents harsh chemicals from eroding the skin’s natural oils further.
4. Laundry Detergent
Comes in 2 scents: Fresh Air and Lavender Cedar. S$24.90 per bottle (50 loads)
In our household, we do at least one load of washing per day. With baby clothes, adult clothes, towels and school uniforms, our washing machine is always on the go. The Method laundry detergent comes in a brightly-coloured light weight pump compact bottle designed for one hand use. It contains a plant based formula that is 8x concentrated, delivering big cleaning power with just a few squirts. With Buddy now on semi-solids and the daughter in full day school, a lot of our laundry contains food and sweat stains which are hard to remove but this laundry detergent washes them all clean! The easy dose pump means that there is no mess of excess powder scattering around so one bottle is good for 50 laundry loads.
5. The Dish Soap Pump
Comes in 4 scents: Ginger Yuzu, Cucumber, Sea Minerals and Clementine. S$8.95
The washing up liquid is designed to cut through the toughest grease and stains whilst keeping our hands soft. My dishes were left clean with no streaky marks or any oily residues. I particularly love the citrus freshness of the Ginger Yuzu pump which incidentally has won ‘Top Product of the Year’ in CozyCot’s 2015 Holy Grail Awards! Method Singapore is giving a 15% off Ginger Yuzu Dish Soap Pump at S$7.60 (usual price: S$8.95) from now till 30 September 2015.
Method’s Limited Edition Amercican Range
Southern Peach Hand Wash Gel (S$5.95), Hand Wash Foaming (S$6.95) and Body Wash (S$9.95)
A fresh take on a traditional theme, Method’s limited edition Americana collection brings together vibrant colors, textile-inspired designs and region specific scents. Similar to its other products, this range uses only biodegradable formulas free of dirty ingredients like parabens, phthalates, triclosan or animal by-products. They are gentle on all skins with bottles made with 100% recycled plastic.

Method cleaning products seem to be amazing! I am willing to try them! I don’t like cleaning with toxic cleaners but sometimes the baking soda and the vinegar are not that efficient! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
