We are no strangers to musicals, concerts, plays and we enjoy unwinding over a good laugh watching popular American TV sit-coms like Seinfeld, Friends and Everybody Loves Raymond (until they each ended their runs one by one). When I knew we were going to watch the opening preview of Crazy Christmas, the first thought that came to my mind was, “Is it a musical? A concert? A stand-up comedy?” The simple answer to that is yes, Crazy Christmas is all of that and a mighty entertaining one too!

Selena Tan returns with Pamela Oei and, newcomer, Denise Tan to reprise their roles as the wacky trio – the Dim Sum Dollies aka the Ting Tong Belles, serving up course after course of Crazy Christmas songs, skits, dance routines, jokes and, well, just about anything, to give the audience a super entertaining and engaging 90 minute show full-on without any intervals.
Gracing the show along with the Dim Sum Dollies are comedic and seasoned theatre thespians like Sebastian Tan (aka Broadway Beng) and Judee Tan accompanied by local accapella group ‘Vocaluptuous’. Kumar is the cherry on the cake with his distinguished class of wit and humor.

Right from the get go, the audience will not have a chance to sit back and relax. You will be riveted at the edge of your seats to the multi-genre, multi-discipline, back-to-back energetic performances. We were transported from the world of swing, K-pop, jazz, cabaret to that of getai, stand-up comedy and even electronic games – all done with flawless finesse and precise timing. The Christmasy music and songs are cleverly written weaving in some current pop tunes with a dash of local flavor.
One thing though, the weeknight shows are rated R18 with its puns and one-liners cleverly punctuated with sexual innuendos and blush-worthy dance moves, all this even before drag queen Kumar appears on stage. The afternoon matinees are the ‘sanitized’ version suitable for the general public and families.
This latest production by Dream Academy does not disappoint. In fact, it delivers volumes of laughter in large doses of catchy tunes and reasonably impressive dance moves. Crazy Christmas is a great show to put you right in the festive mood! So…just leave the kids with the gramps and catch this highly entertaining local production which, if Esplanade allows, would have the audience rolling off the seats and onto the floor.
