Chinese New Year is a festival of memories. As a child, I remember how my auntie would bring us to departmental stores to buy new outfits. I will also diligently help my Mum spring-clean the home. Growing up in a single-parent home, we were not affluent so our CNY preps were kept simple: one new set of bedsheets and PJs for my sister and I, a new set of curtains for the home (which I bought from Ikea with my own savings) and a few mandatory CNY snacks. Now that I’m a working Mom (with disposable income), it is my privilege to shop for my kids.
With so many online retail stores mushrooming, consumers are spoiled for choice. But as a discerning shopper, I know very well price does not equate quality. My husband would also tell you I have very specific ‘tastes’ in the clothing choice for my children. The clothes must not only must look good, they must make the kids ‘feel’ good. Dana is at an age where she will tell us, ‘Mommy, I don’t like this (shirt/dress/blouse) because it’s prickly’. So comfort and style are my key deciding factors. Of course, price plays a part too so I am always on the look out for sales.
I was first introduced to ‘itsy bitsy ME!‘ two years ago while shopping for CNY clothes for Dana. I was drawn to the chic selection of children’s apparels and its very beautifully illustrated web design. Started by a Mumpreneur, Mei, whose motto is to inspire kids with everyday green living, she aims to offer parents alternative choices to conventional brands. Her team handpicks from a new generation of designers around the globe, who creates sustainable design products that fit perfectly with our modern day lifestyles.
Mei brings in products of the highest quality on the ‘itsy bitsy ME!‘ store that are meant to last (to be passed down from sibling to sibling). The clothing are either ethically manufactured in limited quantity to reduce wastage or made with natural fibre such as organic cotton or bamboo viscose. I can testify to the quality as the 3 Cheong-sam dresses I bought for Dana two years ago are still in pristine condition after many washes (no colour fading, no shrinkage whatsoever).
Back to CNY Shopping 2015, I had such a hard time deciding what to buy from the store because so many designs caught my fancy. After hours of browsing, I picked the following:
1. A set of matchy matchy sibling singlet and tee set from Vintage Lucy’s.
2. A mandarin-collared Cheong-sam from Redfish Kids in this empire cut which I love, love, love.
3. A sparkly, glittery Unicorn Tee from Stella Blu for Dana which brings forth her bubbly, active personality.
When we do online shopping, we are usually taking a gamble. Each time my ‘loot’ arrives, I would open the package with bated breath. Very rarely do the clothes appear nicer than their online photos but these did! The materials were soft and light, the colours distinctively vibrant. I was mightily pleased when the kids did not fuss a wee bit when they wore them out for an outdoor play-date and Dana requested to wear them again the following day. I’m happy the clothes turn out so comfy and stylish!
