I woke up bright and early today with a sense of anticipation…it is the day of our Adult Canvas Art Class sponsored by HeART Studio as part of the SMB’s 1st Anniversary Celebration. Having last dabbled in Art eons ago (when I was a Secondary 4 student), I was thankful for the opportunity to rekindle my love for painting. When I first told the hubs that I would be at HeART Studio on Sunday, his first reaction was, ‘Oh, you signed the daughter up for a class?” I smiled, “No…I signed myself up for a class!” He was surprised but ever so supportive. As I look at the Mommies present today, I was glad that we are able devote some time to ourselves, to indulge in our interests and discover our talents!
For the lesson today, we were taught to recreate the French Painter, Hughes Claude Pissarro’s Masterpiece: Camille Pissaro Sails. It’s a beautiful and tranquil piece of painting.

|The medium of drawing for today – Oil Pastels!|
Using the common oil pastels, we have to complete our painting using this technique of quick, short strokes to blend the oil pastel colours on canvas. Teacher Ghaz instructed us to first outline the horizon and the subjects (i.e. the sails) using a pale colour (such as yellow or beige) before we fill in the rest of colours for the sea and the sky. As I started to sketch, memories of my ‘O’ level Art lessons came flooding back…my quirky Art teacher, the scores of still life paintings done week after week…the labourious wood burning project which I nearly gave up…Today, as I set aside time just to paint, I found it therapeutic to colour and blend and let the painting come to life right before my eyes…

Time slips by quickly when we’re having fun…All of us were so engaged in our artwork that we hardly noticed that one hour has passed. When Teacher Ghaz announced that we only had 30 minutes to go, I had not even began painting my main subjects – the sails! I quickened my pace and managed to complete my painting just in time for the group photo-taking. A bit rushed but hey, we did it nonetheless! All the Mommies’ paintings are as unique as their personalities but equally splendid…We SMB are truly a talented bunch!

|My 1st Oil Pastel Painting as a Mom!|
While I didn’t think too highly of my piece initally, Dana was full of praise for my artwork the minute I stepped into the car. Knowing that my daughter thinks highly of my artistic talent made me grin from ear to ear (it’s always nice to give your child a reason to idolise you)…it has also given me new inspiration how to engage her on days when we have nothing planned…
Participating in today’s art class has given me a great deal of satisfaction. Perhaps it’s the fact that I can be away from family obligations for an afternoon to do something which I enjoy (yet rarely get the chance to); the fact that I get to meet fellow Mommy friends from SMB and learn a new skill together…and the fact that I can bring my canvas painting (the 1st one I ever painted as a Mom) to adorn my office walls tomorrow (yay!). I enjoyed today’s session so much that I’m toying with the idea of signing up for the Adult Oil Painting Class!
