Couple times for us are important but rare. We’ve never been comfortable leaving the daughter in the care of others for too long a time due to accountability and risk issues. Hence, we have to be very selective in the dates we go on. One of those ‘fail-proof’ couple dates that we will never say no to is that of watching live musicals together.
Now on at the MBS Grand Theatre till 18 May! |
When we heard that GREASE – the musical is making its comeback to Singapore, we were psyched. Having been a fan of the movie version and all those timeless 50s hits, I knew watching it live on stage with a cast fresh from London’s West End and their recent Australian tour would really make this date a truly unforgettable one…and I was right.
The current production is staged at the Mastercard Grand theatre at Marina Bay Sands – a world-class venue befitting an iconic musical. You can expect all the bright colours and bold prints of the rock and roll era, infectious dance tunes with the classic rock and roll riffs, grooves and who can forget the sweet, innocent lyrics set to romantic rock ballads. Be prepared to laugh, jive, groove, sway and singalong to the timeless hits of ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’, ‘Those Magic Changes’ and ‘Summer Lovin’ – performed by the high-energy cast whichis accompanied by a LIVE STAGE BAND to boot – now THAT’s a bonus: to hear these well-loved 50s tune performed live is worth the ticket price itself!

Sandra and the Pink Ladies… |
Initiated into a whole new ‘world’… |
Of course, one cannot mention GREASE without thinking about John Travolta and Oliver Newton John and whether anyyone can fill their shoes in reprising the roles of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dee. The main cast did an admirable job considering the demanding dance and song routines and stage presence (almost 100%!) required! The supporting dancers and singers carried their roles exceptionally well too – familiar names of the T-birds and Pink ladies such as that of Ritzo, Kenieki, Frenchy and Putzie ‘electrified’ the stage. Worth mentioning is also the amorous DJ, Vince Fontaine, who carried his role perfectly to the T.
The black-jacket T-birds.. |
Grease – a Love Story set in the ’50s! |
This musical, set against the glorious years of rock and roll and centred around the themes of friendship, self-identity, acceptance amongst adolescent angst, makes for an exceptional date with that special someone or gathering of friends…Feel free to go in leather jackets, big prints, tight jeans, ‘Elvis’ hairdo (complete with sideburns) and…don’t forget your dancing shoes!
P.S. For those who are considering bringing young kids along, be prepared to explain to them certain colourful adult lingo, gestures and liberal practices prolific with the pop culture and times of that colourful era.
