I would visit Madame Tussauds Singapore again and again. Seriously. Why? Well, I was too 'star struck' and missed out on striking up meaningful conversations with my family during the media preview last Saturday. Here’s what transpired. You see, finally! I was so excited that we have our very own installation of the world-class attraction. Walking through the exhibits, any adult would be totally captivated to see legends, celebrities, international icons and political personalities…all in … [Read more...]

A Merry-Not-Scary Halloween: Safari Boo at the River Safari!
It's our family's first ‘Halloween’ outing…and it ain’t scary, it’s the Safari Boo! Yes, you read it right. It was MY first ‘Halloween’ experience at 40+ years old. We are not fans of Halloween. Mainly because the wife and I don’t believe in desensitizing and glamorizing terror, violence and gore to our kids -there’s enough ‘Halloween’ going around in the world as it is these days...just read the news! So when we received the invite to River Safari’s ‘Merry-Not-Scary’ Safari Boo Halloween … [Read more...]
Sweet, Succulent Swensen’s Lobster Rolls
Apart from its functional purposes, our senses can trigger a whole host of emotions and memories. I recently had such an experience and surprisingly, it was not at any exotic locations but rather at the all-familiar Swensen's restaurant. Sinking my teeth into their newly introduced Boston Lobster Roll and Slipper Lobster Roll transported me to Boston pier which my family recently visited in June. Sans the baying of the sea gulls and the sea breeze, the chunky, succulent flesh of the … [Read more...]
From Policies to Busy Bodies: When an Adopted Child is NOT a ‘Normal’ Child
Before we embarked on this adoption journey, we thought that the greatest hurdle was to convince ourselves that the child is ours. After all, there is no biological connection. But, you know what? That’s just hogwash – the moment we carried him in our arms, he is ours. In fact, in the short time span of 4 months, we have almost forgotten that he was adopted. Amazing isn’t it? All these worries about whether we can love the child as our own just dissipate into thin air. In every sense of the … [Read more...]
Feel the beat of the Dancing Queen – Mamma Mia! LIVE in Singapore
A mother…a daughter and 3 possible dads! What can I say except…MAMMA MIA! We watched this smash-hit musical MAMMA MIA! LIVE in London’s West End in 2005 and couldn’t get enough of it. If you think the movie version starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried was good, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Set in a beach resort in the Mediterranean, MAMMA MIA! tells the story of Sophie, a bride-to-be with one wish: to have her absent father walk her down the aisle. After reading … [Read more...]
What’s in a name?
Recently, Angie and I had to look through the tons of books on our bookshelf to search for a rather important book that we have not seen (or used) for awhile (6 years to be precise). For the simple reason that we have just welcomed our baby boy and needed to look for a name for him. Initially, we couldn’t find the book. To make matters worse, we were given three days to decide on a name. Eventually we found it…but that was only the easy part. It’s common to read in magazines and tabloids … [Read more...]
Stick Man – Stick To What Counts, Your Family Tree
Stick Man lives in the family tree With his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three. One day he wakes early and goes for a jog. Stick Man, oh Stick Man, beware of the dog! I think we've just watched the best children's play of the year today and it's none other than Stick Man, an ingenious 50 minute adaptation based on the story with the same name by our favourite author, Julia Donaldson. The production is incredibly well-put together, with captivating storytelling and clever play … [Read more...]
Paws up for the Hairy Maclary and Friends Show…
We enjoyed watching Hairy Maclary and Friends on stage. Set against brightly-painted backdrops and colourful costumes, the one-hour adaptation of Lynley Dodd's much-loved series of books is held together by Miss Plum and Samuel Stone, the butcher who weaved together favourite Hairy tales with music and splendid rhymes. The show is structured around the central theme of finding Miss Plum's lost items, and is interspersed with musical adaptations of several of the Hairy Maclary … [Read more...]
Once My Child, Always My Child…In Memory of Nathaniel’s 10th Anniversary
October is the "Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month" in the United States. I wonder why here in this part of the world, we don't have ever commemorate or even set aside days like that...too pragmatic perhaps with no room (and time) for sentimentality. Here, pregnancy and infant loss is very much a taboo affair. People will offer some sympathy when it happens ("Oh you poor thing") but then very quickly expect you to 'snap out of it' and return to normal programming the next day. Friday … [Read more...]
“Papa…Please get the Moon for me?”
This post is for those people in those moments who, like me, have had a long, hectic day at work and struggling to muster every last ounce of energy to make whatever moments that's left of the day...count. Ever had those days? It all began, in fact, yesterday, when I heard on the radio that there would be a rare lunar eclipse the next day and I wanted to catch that moment with the family. So you can say that I began the day, with the end in mind. In fact, very much in mind. But it was … [Read more...]
