By the time you read this post, we're off to a short vacation to the land of the rising sun. It's our family's very first trip to Japan, we'll be doing it entirely Free & Easy and relying on the locals to help us on a daily basis. Naturally we want Dana to know more about this amazing country before we go. Here are some titles from the National Library which we've read in the past weeks leading up to the trip. Apart from books, we've also watched this DVD "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" … [Read more...]
Lifelong Learning, Active Ageing at the PA Senior Academy
Growing up under the loving care of my maternal Grandmother, senior citizens have a special place in my heart. I was very heartened to learn that the People's Association (PA) has launched the ‘Senior Academy’ with the key mission to encourage more seniors (50 years old and above) to pursue lifelong learning aspirations and lead an active, happy lifestyle. Through the Senior Academy, they can pick up new knowledge, skills, interests, and make new like-minded friends. This will enable … [Read more...]
Mothers’ Day Blocking Printing Workshop at Fox Fashion
The Mothers' Day Weekend was also my Birthday weekend. It kicked off to a great start when we attended the Block Printing Workshop organised by Fox Fashion in collaboration with Fictive Fingers. As Mothers, we don't expect gifts of any kind but a handcrafted gift warms the heart like none other. What made the workshop even more special were the distinctive pattern stamps that first originated from hand drawings then painstakingly crafted by the pair of sisters, Hani and Aishah behind … [Read more...]
In the stillness – A Mother’s Day Tribute 2015
This post is written by David for the two amazing women in his life. It was late and I didn’t want to wake anyone up. I crept quietly from the bathroom to a room I know all too well – my bedroom, except that I had not stepped into my bedroom for almost 4 years - I was overseas studying and had just returned upon graduation. As the timber floor of my maternal home protested with the all too familiar creaks, I turned to my Mum’s room with a guilty face ready to apologise for waking her up … [Read more...]
The truth hurts…when your child lies…
Have you had days when you just felt like an utter failure? Today was one of those days for me. I discovered my daughter had lied to me, in front of her classmates, right in school. I was crushed. My parenting mantra has always been good character above good grades. Yet my child has chosen to disobey me and displease God. This is not the first instance she lied this year and we've used all methods of discipline: time out, withdrawal of privileges, writing lines and yes even caning. We … [Read more...]
View from a plane ride…and what it had shown me: A tribute to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew
What do you remember when you were 4? For me, not much but among the few early memories I can recall is a flight. Probably my first. I remembered my mum excitedly asking me to look down at the lights below. Yes, it was a night flight and we were returning from my very first trip to Singapore. What do you remember when you were in Primary School? For me, apart from the wonderful memories of friends, teachers, family moments and my first school, were our regular visits to … [Read more...]
A nation mourns…the giant who walked among us…
Photo Credit When news of our late Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's hospitalisation broke earlier this year in February 2015, the nation rallied in prayers. We wanted him to tarry a little, we want him more than ever, to be there to celebrate the fruits of his labour on SG50 National Day. A feisty idealist, a strategic thinker, an exceptional visionary, a far-sighted leader who dedicated his entire life to nation building and transformed Singapore … [Read more...]
Danger Dan: A true-blue Singaporean Superhero brings reading to life!
It is a well-known fact that authentic learning is one of the best forms of learning. From applying what we have read and studied to actually seeing and visiting the places which we have read and, if we are lucky, perhaps even interviewing the author or seeing an experiment come to life! As adults, we feel the anticipation when seeing our favourite books bring brought to life on the big screen. In fact, the excitement is enhanced when we have the opportunity to visit places described in … [Read more...]
‘Get off B****! ‘ : Close encounter of the offending kind
I had an extreme encounter recently at a local 5* family resort, all within a span of 10 minutes. The first encounter began with me standing in line for my Egg Benedict, freshly made by a friendly elderly lady who was manning the egg station. In her soft, grammatically-correct English, she asked, “Did you study there?” pointing at the T-shirt I was wearing. I looked down and it was a ‘Harvard Dad’ souvenir tee bought during our visit to Harvard, Boston last June. I was quite taken aback … [Read more...]
Oh, to be a child…to be a child again
I wrote this just as we returned from the funeral of Angie's Grandma. It's particularly depressing as her departure coincided with Chinese New Year...On our way back from the crematorium, we could see droves of families packing their cars in the driveway, ready for the annual reunions or road-trips home. I think we can all agree that Grandparents have a special place in our hearts. For me, I know that no matter how old I am, I will always be a child in my Grandparents' eyes. This is also the … [Read more...]
