In Singapore from 10 to 14 September 2014As parents, we know that developing a sense of imagination, curiosity and humor is essential in a child. It will help in their later years when they face challenges and need to be resourceful, creative and resilient to withstand the stresses of life.Which is why, once in awhile when a show like Bubble Magic comes to our shores, it’s a rare opportunity for us (kids and adults) to have our conventions and presumptions challenged and stretched. I mean, … [Read more...]
Potted Potter: Where good triumphs over evil, with a million laughs in between!
In Singapore this week from 9 to 14 Sept 2014We love theatre, particularly live theatre and we view it as an integral aspect of the holistic development for our children. However, I must admit that when the wife told me we were going to watch POTTED POTTER, I had my reservations. For a start, a live comedy theatre that parodies the dark tales of the world-famous JK Rowling series? All SEVEN books? And with our 6 year-old to boot? (well, they did say the show's for '6 year-olds to Dumbledore, … [Read more...]
Guest Post at Yahoo Parenting: Why I play Lego with my Daughter
We were honoured to be invited by Yahoo Parenting to contribute an article last month. Let me reproduce the piece which Dana's Daddy wrote on the benefits of staying indoors sometimes and a few important lessons he glean from a Sunday afternoon spent playing (Lego) with his daughter... First published on Yahoo Parenting on 18 Aug 2014. Read the original article here. I've always enjoyed reading the hubby's … [Read more...]
A ‘fowl’ encounter that changed my life – Chin Chin Chicken Rice
Old fan...old sign...old favourite - Chin Chin Hainanese Chicken Rice. This place changed my life. Literally.I was a young Penangite starting out a career in Singapore after my undergraduate studies. Like most of my townsfolk, good food is an important part of my life – after all, Penang is synonymous with tasty hawker fare at every corner. In addition to adjusting to the hectic work life in Singapore and transiting from being a student to a working professional, the frustration of … [Read more...]
Cavalia in Singapore: Simply Spellbinding!
It’s been a hectic work week - long and exhausting and I've mothering duties awaiting me but yet, I just had to draft this post. Tight deadline? No. Well, simply put, we're spellbound. Cavalia's 1st Asian Tour - Singapore! We've watched our lion’s share of world-class performances ranging from local productions to West End and Broadway musicals - all critically acclaimed and excellent in their own rights (some even award-winning). Yet, I’ve never seen anything quite like ‘Cavalia’. … [Read more...]
A tribute…to the people of NDP 2014!
Each year, I look forward to the arrival of August for one reason: National Day. Today, Singapore celebrates its 49th National Day, what a journey it has been for the NDP organising committee. From rehearsal to rehearsal, every show is nothing short of spectacular. This year will most likely be the last (since 2007) that the celebrations will be held against the magnificent backdrop of modern Singapore’s Marina Bay and CBD skyline which I find symbolic because it puts into perspective how … [Read more...]
P1 School Balloting: A nerve-wrecking, ball of an experience
It’s kind of like seeing a ghost - you never quite believe what others go through until it happens to you. So here I am, sitting alone in my car, parked in the compound of what I hope would be my child’s future school. I said a quiet prayer, switched off the car engine, armed the alarm and walked towards the school office - conscious that I would return in less than an hour’s time with a reality that either my wife and I have hoped for or…otherwise. Yes, I am here to … [Read more...]
Standing The Test of Time – My Queenstown Heritage Trail
I've always just driven by the town....until now.As a history buff, I have a penchant for old buildings and structures. From Borobudur to Stonehenge, I’ve been there, hugged that. Whenever I 'disappear' when we were on holiday, my wife would know where to find me – just look for an old church, an art gallery or a museum. Strange then that I should end up in Singapore – a young progressive nation that seems to be tearing down old structures faster than we can reproduce. Even a grand dame … [Read more...]
For the people, by the people, of the people – National Day Parade 2014
Same same but different this time around. This is perhaps one of the most difficult post for me to write. Why? Well, I’ve experienced a myriad of activities over the past month or so that has left me a tad overwhelmed. I suspect primarily that it has brought out the ‘little boy’ within me. I mean how can a ‘little boy’ contain his excitement when he had the opportunity to go on-board an actual warship and was taken on a Fast Craft Utility (FCU) ride during the annual ‘Navy@Vivo’ event. The … [Read more...]
From Austrian hills to Singapore shores…comes The Sound of Music!
Watching musicals is our family’s all time favourite activity. The creative synergy of music, dance, drama and theatrical props bring plots and themes to life like no other genre. It’s also the best way to cultivate a love and appreciation for performance arts in our kids.In Singapore for a limited season till 10 August 2014 Arguably one of the world’s best-loved musicals, THE SOUND OF MUSIC tells the true story of a young nun-wannabe, ‘Maria Rainer’ who was sent to be a governess to the … [Read more...]
