In our Chinese culture, nephews or nieces address their eldest aunt from the paternal side ‘Gu Ma’ – 姑妈. So when we received the food tasting invite from this restaurant endearingly named ‘Gu Ma Jia’ 姑妈家 (loosely translated as ‘Eldest Aunt’s House’), we knew we were in for a treat.
‘Gu Ma Jia’ 姑妈家 is located in the famous Sennett Estate which is dotted with many popular eateries. The founder of the restaurant is a spiritedly housewife (affectionately known as ‘Gu Ma’ 姑妈) who grew up on Pulau Ubin island and has more than 10 years of experience running a very successful Chicken Rice stall. Being a versatile cook, ‘Gu Ma’ – 姑妈 decided to set up a restaurant with just one aim in mind – to offer a place for families to strengthen family bonds over the joy of eating delicious home-cooked food. Her recipes proved such a hit that the restaurant has been awarded the ‘Top 10 Favourite Restaurant’ at the Singapore Food Festival in consecutive years 2012 & 2013!
Dining at ‘Gu Ma Jia’ 姑妈家 is like stepping into your aunt’s cosy abode. Food is cooked from the heart, with the freshest ingredients and no preservatives or MSG. True to their motto, prices here are kept reasonable with no GST or service charge! There are 2 levels to the restaurant; the ground level sits 55 pax while the upper level sits up to 70 pax. It also comes equipped with a karaoke system and projector, ideal for family celebrations! We were there on a Thursday evening and it was nearly packed to capacity. This testifies to the appeal of ‘Gu Ma Jia’ 姑妈家.
These are the dishes we feasted during our visit:
Homemade Yam Ring with Kyoto Pork Ribs (S$30) and Yuan Yang Kailan (S$10/15/20).
Crispy and Crunchy. Even kids will love this!
Ubin Lala Bee Hoon (S$18) and Herbal Chicken. Perfect for rainy days!
Satay Cuttlefish (S$18) and Claypot Pork in Sesame Oil (S$15/23/30).

The superior broth makes us going for second (and third) helpings!

‘Gu Ma Jia’ 姑妈家 is accepting reservations for its 2015 CNY Reunion Dinner. Set Menus are available at S$488, S$588 and S$888 per table of 10 pax. Book early to avoid disappointment.
