As parents, we know that reading is important. Not only is it a life skill, it helps with the acquisition of language, nurtures the mind and hones the all important ability to focus.

As parents, we try means and ways to entice our children to read. From dramatic bedtime story-telling to listening to audio books (instead of our favourite contemporary hits) on car trips etc. We invest heavily (both through purchases to spending time in the library) in books by acclaimed children’s authors such as Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Julia Donaldson and Judith Kerr to name a few. Beyond that, there is one other way reading be made more exciting and meaningful: Live Theatre.

We are strong advocates of Live Theatres and have brought Dana to dramas, plays (and musicals) from as early as we could. Among so many that we have attended, we have always been impressed by the ones brought in by Kidsfest. So good that even the accompanying parents are inspired. For Kidsfest plays, its never just entertainment, but there are loads of clever play of language, creative artistic interpretations and educational values within. In our recent viewing of Stick Man, we could even see how the music and sound effects enhance the narration as they were performed live with percussion, strings and wind instruments!

We remember laughing and learning (oh those puns and jokes!) alongside Dana to Kidsfest plays such as those from the Horrible History series and the Snail and the Whale. Here in Singapore, we are truly blessed to be able to watch world-class productions whose professional cast hails from the land of live theatres – London’s West End. This, we’ve got Kidsfest to thank.

Talking about Books coming alive, we met Mr. Gruffalo himself at a ‘Meet & Greet’ session early this month. The children’s eyes lit up when they saw characters from their storybooks appear before their eyes!

We received an even greater ‘treat’ yesterday afternoon at our playdate. When who should drop by and join us for tea? None other than Mr. Tiger himself (from the book ‘The Tiger who came to Tea)! Tiger also brandished some yummy cupcakes to join in the occasion. Dana and her friends were absolutely stoked to see their favourite Tiger but instead of guzzling the tea (like in the story), Tiger left all the cupcakes for us to enjoy.
