It’s our family’s first ‘Halloween’ outing…and it ain’t scary, it’s the Safari Boo!

Yes, you read it right. It was MY first ‘Halloween’ experience at 40+ years old. We are not fans of Halloween. Mainly because the wife and I don’t believe in desensitizing and glamorizing terror, violence and gore to our kids -there’s enough ‘Halloween’ going around in the world as it is these days…just read the news! So when we received the invite to River Safari’s ‘Merry-Not-Scary’ Safari Boo Halloween event, I was initially apprehensive. But with the emphasis Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) places on education, I decided to give it a go…especially since it had a ‘Merry-Not-Scary’ tag to it.

Our daughter with her BFFs!

I was happy we did. Here’s why:

Firstly, it’s not a Halloween party; far from it actually. Safari Boo is an educational and engaging experience for the whole family and wait for this…the kids go in for FREE! Yes, as long as there’s a paying adult, any kid below 12 goes in for FREE!

"RvrSfr078

We’ve been to the River Safari many times but this time…it’s special.

"RvrSfr083

There’s mystery and intrigue everywhere…

One of the best ways for learning to take place is to first stimulate a sense of curiosity and intrigue. For Safari Boo, the good folks at the River Safari stir up interest in the animals by associating them to characters found in children fables, folklores and classic literature (think Snow White, Frankenstein, Harry Potter etc). At 7pm, the kids were treated to a special “River Talk: Myths & Legends” Show where they get to see, touch and feel ‘strange’ creatures and exotic animals, all under the mysterious cloak of the evening sky. You could see how enthralled the preschoolers were!

"RvrSfr093

A show not to be missed.

"SafariBoo

"RvrSfr173

A chance to get close…very close to some special creatures.

"RvrSfr174

"RvrSfr175

Their faces say it all – Wow! Amazing!

"RvrSfr179

One of the special creatures we got close to – a Tarantula!

"RvrSfr161

Have you ever seen a ‘dragon’ perched on a tree?

That’s not all, perhaps our favourite part of the evening was the interactive hands-on learning stations set up around the themes of bones, blood, scales etc. where kids are encouraged to use their senses to discover unique physical and biological characteristics of the animals in River Safari, how cool is that?

"RvrSfr138

Finding out the different colour of blood in these creatures – they are not all red you know…

"RvrSfr146

Unearthing some interesting bones.

Matching their…poo! – Dried and sterilised of course!

For the adults, it was relaxing to stroll the tranquil River Safari at night. We were impressed at how the park was transformed into a magical, kiddy Halloween land with glistening fairy lights and fun riddles for kids to solve along the trail. The hardworking crew was also decked out in various ‘not-too-scary’ costumes (such as Mummy, Mermaid, Fairy etc). to distribute treats freely, much to the delight of the kids . All in, it was a most unique and memorable experience. If you’ve always wanted to (re)visit the River Safari, grab this chance to discover it in a whole new light…literally. It promises to be a night of wild, wow merriment without the blood, gore and horror traditionally associated with Halloween parties.

Here’s Dave’s Survival Tips for Safari Boo!

1. Go early and feed the kids: The River Safari entrance is right next to the Singapore Zoo (they are within 3 mins walking distance of each other). You can go early and have your dinner at the food outlets at the entrance of the Zoo or the River Safari before the programme begins at 6pm. By the time the event ends at 9pm, all of the F&B outlets would be closed.

2. Bring drinking water – Yes, have a bottle or best, two handy. We were thirsty midway but had to wait till the nearest vending machine at the exit to share a sip as all the eateries inside the park had closed.

3. Dress comfortably – While 90% of the River Safari’s attractions are sheltered (rain proof), it is also non air-conditioned. So, ditch your Halloween costumes and go in comfy shoes and sleeveless tees (if possible) to survive the humid, balmy evenings. You may want to bring a small fan and an umbrella in case you parked at the outdoor car park area.

4. Go with a camera – There will be lots of chances for photos with the animals and fabled characters around the park.

5. Go with an open mind – Like them or not, these characters are part and parcel of our legends, fables and folklores we grew up with (e.g. I can’t imagine how Snow White’s story would pan out without the witch). To the credit of the River Safari crew, these fabled characters are not too scary or intimidating. If anything, they are actually colorful, creative and blend in with the River Safari theme in the whole scheme of things. Kudos to the River Safari for bringing us on a most enjoyable, ‘not-scary’ Safari Boo!

"RvrSfr084

You’ll have a ‘Fang-tastic’ time here.

We had a good time!
