I think we’ve just watched the best children’s play of the year today and it’s none other than Stick Man, an ingenious 50 minute adaptation based on the story with the same name by our favourite author, Julia Donaldson.\u00a0 The production is incredibly well-put together, with captivating storytelling and clever play of masterful rhymes. Julia Donaldson has taken an nondescript, ordinary stick (which most children pick and play with at the park), given it an identity, created the Stick Man and his very endearing family comprising of the \u2018Stick Lady Love and his Stick Children Three\u2019. The show follows the (mis)adventures of Stick Man from the moment he is separated from his family during a morning jog and gets involved in a series of ‘dangerous’ escapades – he was chewed by a dog, pecked by a swan, swept by the sea, used as a bat, caught in a snowstorm and nearly used as wood in the fireplace. Thankfully, Stick Man was saved by Santa (every child’s fav) in the nick of time who then gave him a lift back to the Sycamore Family Tree to be reunited back with his beloved family, just in time for Christmas.<\/p>\n
Produced by the same creative team behind ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’, Stick Man is to date, the most entertaining children’s show we’ve watched in 2014. The audience’s imagination is riveted from the outset – from the amazing live music accompaniment on the ukelele, saxophone, melodica and percussion instruments, the creative lighting which adds to the dramatization, the creative props made from simple everyday objects (such as umbrella, rubber floats, ribbons),\u00a0 the rhythmic songs, catchy rhymes and fun ‘knock-knock’ jokes. The highlight of the show has got to be its versatile and talented 3 person cast who delivered the lines with impeccable wit and comical timing. It was magical to see the Stick Man story being brought to life right before our eyes so much so that I felt a teeny sense of loss at the end when the performance ended. The children in the audience were bubbling with excitement and over-eager to participate when they were asked to join in a game of beach ball, to recap the events (testing their concentration) and help wake the Stick Man up when he was nearly frozen.<\/p>\n
The Stick Man’s appeal on children is highly infectious, judging from the laughter that ring in the theatre during and after the show. As adults, we too enjoyed this charming production thoroughly as there is a subtle underlying allegory on how everyday distractions in life pull us away in all directions from what truly counts – our family.<\/p>\n
