We enjoyed watching Hairy Maclary and Friends on stage.

Set against brightly-painted backdrops and colourful costumes, the one-hour adaptation of Lynley Dodd’s much-loved series of books is held together by Miss Plum and Samuel Stone, the butcher who weaved together favourite Hairy tales with music and splendid rhymes.

The show is structured around the central theme of finding Miss Plum’s lost items, and is interspersed with musical adaptations of several of the Hairy Maclary stories. Prior to the show, we haven’t read any of all the Hairy Maclary books but Dana was able to enjoy the performance. Being the dog lover that she is, she naturally loved the characters.

The largely preschooler audience were invited to participate by spotting the lost items, joining in the hand actions, singing along and making sound effects. This kept the kids thoroughly entertained throughout the highly interactive performance. The theme song is so catchy that the kids were still humming, “Hairy Maclary (pant, pant, pant) from Donaldson’s Dairy” after the show.

Besides Hairy and his adorable canine friends, the show also features two other interesting characters, the toughest tomcat in town, Scarface Claw (which I personally found most amusing) and the helpful duck Zachary Quack. In this age where 3D movies are the rage, Hairy Maclary is a refreshing production to introduce our kids to good old wholesome theatre entertainment – no fancy computer animation, just traditional rhymes, catchy songs, and a troupe of professional dramatists who can act, sing and narrate well. The show had done well to enthuse the young audience in Hairy Maclary stories as Dana clamoured to head to the library (just right below the Drama Centre Theatre) to loan the books right after, of which we are most happy to oblige. Hairy Maclary and Friends will be here till Sunday 12 October, don’t miss it.
