We went on the inaugural homelearning excursion to an Eco Farm last weekend. Here are Top 5 Things we like about this outing:

1. The Rustic Surroundings

The farm is located in a secluded part of Singapore, in far flung Neo Tiew Road. Even before we stepped into the farm, Daddy spotted these birds’ nests hanging from the trees towering above us. We later learnt from a fellow Mommy that these are Baya Weavers’ nests. What a gorgeous sight to behold!

Can you spot the yellow baya bird perching on the nest in the top left photo?

While waiting for the programme to start, we walked around the farmyard and spotted these trays of seedings waiting to be potted. I love how tiny and green these seedlings are; so young yet full of potential – just like every child present!

2. The Educational Farm Trail

Once all the participants have arrived, we were given a mini lecture on green ecology on how plants grow and parts of a plant. The children were taught a song on insects, sung to the tune of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’. Pity the sound system was a let down and the humidity was causing the young ones to lose concentration. I guessed everyone was eager to start the farm tour!

3. Sustainable Farming

We were split into two groups and the volunteer guide brought us on a quick tour around the Eco Farm.

Here are our intrepid little farmers listening to the guide’s commentary.

We were excited to spot some common fruits and vegetables along the trail…I for once, learnt the difference between a male and a female papaya tree!

and some not-so-common ones like this old Fig tree…

The trail was interactive, with the guide stopping often for the kids to touch, feel and smell the plants…

We were told even a seemingly useless weed like this serve a function – they can be used to tie very strong knots!

Spotted a farmer at work weeding the bushes…

4. Exotic Fauna

We were fortunate to spot some pretty dragonflies and suntanning igunas along the trail too!

5. Hands-on Planting!

The highlight for the children was the planting activity. We were told to bring a clean, empty Yakult bottle each and the kids were delighted to get their hands dirty scooping spoonfuls of soil into the bottles.

Look Mommy! Earthworms!

After the bottles are filled with soil, the kids were given a red mint sapling to grow inside their bottles.

The planting activity concluded a successful morning of the Eco Farm tour. We bade fond farewells to our tour mates and left tired, sweaty but definitely happy.
