During the June school vacation, we were extended a very exclusive preview of the most recent addition to the shark family at Underwater World Singapore — the Zebra Horn Sharks. When we told the kids about this invite, they couldn’t contain their excitement and joy!

I did a little research and discovered that what makes the Zebra Horn Sharks distinct from the rest of the other horn sharks is the Zebra-like vertical stripes across their body, as their name suggests. Although they do not have the physique of the great white sharks or characteristic features for hunting, the Zebra Horn Sharks possess a set of compressed teeth which can crush and grind even shelled prey.

We arrived at the Underwater World bright and early. Dana and Caleb fed the Hawksbill SeaTurtles at the entrance. The Hawksbill turtles are predominantly found in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and they are a critically endangered species. Here in Singapore, we’re very fortunate to be able to see them at the Underwater World.

We headed for the Zebra Horn Sharks once we entered the aquarium. They are small in physique but really beautiful! The kids were captivated by their graceful maneuver in the water.

The kids spent some time admiring the shark fossils in the Living Fossils gallery. Dana was amazed at how huge the jaws are! Yes, my dear, big enough to swallow you whole!

The highlight for the day was the Story-telling session by Bookaburra Books. We enjoyed listening to Eric Carle’s ‘Mister Seahorse’ story and the kids loved the easy handicraft using cloth pegs!

As parents, I felt such hands-on activities made the visit more engaging and educational. I liked the story so much that I googled for additional craft ideas to do with the kids as a follow up to the ‘Mister Seahorse’ story. Here’s an interesting one to share: http://onecrayolashort.blogspot.sg/2011/02/eric-carles-mr-seahorse.html
Just before we proceeded for lunch, we bought some fish pellets and the kids started a feeding frenzy among the fishes!

After lunch, we hopped over the Dolphin Lagoon and joined thousands of tourists in anticipation of the Pink Dolphins and cheeky sealions performance. The sun was beating down hard on us but once the show started, everyone was engrossed.

This isn’t our first time watching the animal show at Underwater World but it never fails to touch my heart to see the incredible bonds shared by the sea mammals and their animal trainers. We are in awe of their intelligence and ability to execute commands on cue. No doubt, much of their behaviours are ‘trained’ using the conditioning paradigm (Pavlov), but they deserve every bit the credit and applause for delighting the audience with their antics.

Before we end this post, we’ll like you to say ‘Hi’ to some of the more unusual sea creatures which completed our adventure at the fascinating Underwater World. They are:

The pig-nosed turtle

Horse-shoe Crab

Strange looking Eel

Gigantic Snow Crabs

Enigmatic Jellyfishes

Mister Seahorse himself…

And possibly the ancestors of the cockroaches – the deep sea Isopods!

We had an extremely fun-filled day at the Underwater World. It’s an excellent destination to introduce our young to the concept of marine conservation and amazing aquatic diversity. We’re looking forward to their next school holiday programme to bring the kids back!
