Most of us instinctively know that art is important for our children. According to educational psychologists, creating art expands a child’s ability to interact with the world around them, and provides a new set of skills for self-expression and communication. Not only does art help to develop the right side of the brain, it also cultivates important skills such as fine motor skills, problem solving skills and communication skills that benefit a child’s all round development.

Daddy and I both love art and it has rubbed off on our Princess. So when the opportunity came for us to experience a free trial at the latest Art School in town, we said YES immediately. Dana has attended art lessons in two other established art schools: Abrakadoodle (Bukit Timah) and Harobee (Fusionopolis) so we were keen to find out what HeART Studio offers.

Our criterion for choosing a good art school are simple:

1. Environment – Must be conducive, clean and accessible.

2. Quality of Teachers and Instruction – Must be patient, able to engage young kids and knowledgeable in their subject matter.

3. Syllabus – Must have a structured syllabus of which achievable outcomes are pre-determined beforehand. Must introduce students to different art forms and give opportunities to dabble in different mediums and hone their artistic skills.

4. Affordability – Must not burn a hole in our pockets!

When we first stepped into HeART Studio, we were greeted by a big colourful wall mural, making the whole place look very welcoming. Once we were ushered into the classroom area, I noticed it is very airy and spacious. Adorning the corridor are paintings of the different classes: Little Dali, Little Picasso and Young Van Gogh. I’m beginning to like the environment already!

As Dana is 4, we joined the Little Dali class. Teacher Shafiq explained the project of the day in simple steps to the 6 little artists who were present. There were also graphic representations of the topic of the day (“Flowers”) and Colour temperature chart on the wall to help the children navigate their task.

Soon after the children each decided what they prefer to draw (Either Daisy or Sunflower), they started doing what they have been patiently waiting for: Painting!

In this short one hour trial, the kids were exposed to two mediums: Canvas Paint and Oil Pastels. All the little artists were very engrossed in their art work and Teacher Shafiq allowed each of them to have free reign of creative expression (be it choice of colours, size of the flowers or the orientation of the painting). He gave very little intervention unless necessary so that the artwork would be authentic.

At the end of the trial, all the little artists stepped out of the classroom with their masterpieces which made their Mommies & Daddies oh so proud! I must say it was a very fruitful session which Dana enjoyed greatly. A lot of credit goes to Teacher Shafiq’s warm personality and ability to communicate well with the children. According to him, the Little Dali’s syllabus consists of preliminary brainstorming and sketching in the child’s individual art folio in one week followed by painting in the other. I like it that there’s some form of formal art pedagogy worked into the syllabus.

So here we have it, Dana’s depiction of a Sunflower, nicely painted on canvas. HeART Studio is offering our readers a special 5% discount if you quote “HSTSMB4” upon signing up of 10 lessons for a term. In addition, to celebrate their new opening, they are offering free trial classes every Saturday & Sunday.
