“It is as if I’ve been hit by a train…” remarked the Hubby.

""

The Hubby took his 2nd dose of the Pfizer-Biontec COVID-19 vaccine and less than 24 hours later, he suddenly developed chills, fever, lethargy during the evening and had to return to see a GP for some flu and fever medication to rest.

He felt generally fine after his first dose and was still largely out and about on the 2nd day after his 2nd dose.

From his experience he has these tips to share:

(Note: Points below are from personal experience. Please consult your own Doctor for vaccination advice.)

""

1. Keep it short: The Pfizer-Biontec jab is administered quite high up the shoulder. Go in a top with easy access to the top part of your shoulder e.g. a short sleeve, sleeveless preferred.

2. Two Weeks: Avoid taking any vaccinations at least 2 weeks prior to the jabs. This includes booster jabs from any other scheduled vaccination (e.g. Hepatitis etc…). Please alert the officers there or declare beforehand should you have taken any other vaccination within 2 weeks of your scheduled COVID-19 vaccination.

3. Evening or night: Waiting time varies among the centers, for convenience and also to avoid waiting too long in the heat of the day, the hubby chose his vaccination slot to be at night.

Also, as the effect of the vaccination varies among individuals, choosing to receive your vaccination at night could be prudent as you can choose to go home and rest. In any case, it is good to keep the plans of your day or two after receiving the vaccination flexible should you experience any discomfort and need to rest.

""

As mentioned, for the Hubby, he did not feel much discomfort after the first jab , save for a feeling of soreness at the vaccinated area that lasted about 3 days. However for the 2nd jab, the Hubby experienced fever, lethargy and flu-like symptoms nearly 24 hours after receiving the jab. He saw a GP nearby and was on medical leave for two days.

4. Better be safe: The staff there may ask you multiple times about your medical conditions i.e. for allergies and other aspects of your medical history such as if you’re on any blood thinning meds, on any allergy meds etc.
.
5. Wait: Depending on the crowd, you may have to wait awhile to take the jab. Bring a good book to read.
..
6. Just like that: The jab is fast and relatively painless. Much much easier than taking blood.
.
7. 30 mins: After the jab, be prepared to wait for at least 30 mins. Your name will be called once the 30 mins is up.
.
8. Certified! Before dismissing you they will ask about how you’re feeling etc….You’ll be issued a vaccination cert. Important to keep! The record is also available on Health hub App. But if you want to be safe, take a picture of it with your handphone immediately and keep it.
.
9. Pop it and rest: If you can, go home to rest right after the jab. Common advice is to pop panadol (if your medical condition allows you to) take vitamin C and rest. I made some green bean soup for the Hubs which he loved. ❤️
.
10. Keep it flexible: Do expect fever, chills, body aching over the next few days hence it’s good to keep your days’ schedule flexible. Go and see a Dr if symptoms persists or worsens.
.
Beware of SCAMs, fake news. Get your info about the vaccination from the right sources, namely the few Singapore government sites and the Ministry of Health websites below:
