Day #2 of the October Playbook Challenge reads: Scat-Singing!

WHAT IS SCAT? To put it simply, Scat is the improvised singing of nonsense syllables in jazz music, similar to an instrumental jazz solo. You use your voice to sing words that you invent.

When I saw this challenge last night, I was stumped momentarily…Scat-singing is not something we do on a daily basis so some inspiration is needed…Daddy had introduced Jazz to Dana and she enjoyed it so I am keen to ride on this challenge to try scat-singing with our spunky girl. I managed to unearth a title from Dana’s book shelf belonging to the awesome Baby Loves Jazz series. With this handy resource, Dana and I had a goofy afternoon scat-singing (or rather attempting to)!

ECHO SCAT

(One person leads; others echo.)

DOOBY – BIP – WAP – SCOO – SHOOBY SCOOBY – BUM – BAM – DO-DAT – WAH-WAH

Once everyone is more comfortable, you can proceed on to another variation – ‘Call & Response’ (parent calls; child responds with a different scat word). It’s really fun, try it! We’ll try to post a video of Dana’s scat-singing soon!
