Day #11 of October Playbook states: Collect 5 types of Leaves and classify them. I remembered as a primary school kid, we were assigned these Young Scientist Cards with projects and activities which we have to complete to earn our young Botanist, young Zoologist and young Geologist certificates and badges. I enjoyed those tremendously and wish Dana would be as fascinated in the Natural world as I did.

Does these bring back fond memories for you too?

Today’s challenge is exactly one which I had done as a primary 3 kid and I particularly looked forward to doing it with Dana. After dinner, we took a stroll in search of leaves belonging to plants which are useful or unique.

Among our finds are leaves from:

1. The Humble Lime Plant

2. The Elegant Blue Pea Plant (otherwise known as the African Scurf Pea)

3. Plant from one of our Family’s Fav Fruit Tree – The Papaya!

4. The Resilient and Prehistoric Fern Plant (which Dana says resembles a Christmas tree!)

5. We don’t know the name of this last plant but we do know its fruit is an edible vegetable (best cooked with sambal!). Our domestic help identified it as ‘Cipir’. If any of you can enlighten us, please do…

Dana labelled the plants and did a short ‘Show & Tell‘ for us. She explained the differences she observed among the 5 types of leaves then picked one as her favourite and justified why. She also learnt a new plant word from today’s activity – “vines”.

D: My fav leaf is the fern and Mommy’s fav is the Blue Pea!

Mother Nature is so full of abundance of beauty and wonder. Have you taken time lately to explore it with your children?

The Little Plant
In the heart of a seed,
Buried deep so deep,
A tiny plant
Lay fast asleep.
“Wake,” said the sunshine,
“And creep to the light.”
“Wake,” said the voice
Of the raindrops bright.
The little plant heard
And it rose to see,
What the wonderful,
Outside world might be.
