Early November, my family and I were invited to the exclusive members’ preview of Sentosa’s newest attraction – the Adventure Cove Waterpark. Honestly, I had my reservations about the Marine Life Park, mainly due to the controversy surrounding its procurement of rare marine life for captivity. Besides, we’ve been to other excellent water-themed parks in Australia with giant water slides, man made geysers, gigantic decorative starfishes and octopuses etc. Nonetheless, the wife and daughter were keen to check out this Water Playground plus, I’ve been literally ‘drowning’ in work these past months so I decided, ‘Heck, Let’s just go.”

The Waterpark was relatively easy to locate: Exit from the Universal Studio escalator, walk towards the Maritime Museum (we had one??) and you’ll see the entrance of Marine Life Park. From there, another 5 mins short walk and you would be welcomed by, yes, ornamental starfishes etc. “Ho hum”, I sighed…”should have just stayed at home in this hot balmy weather…” But I was soon to be proven wrong.

The Adventure Cove Waterpark has an unassuming entrance – low key to some extent. As we entered, we saw more ornamental marine creatures decor, people floating around the ‘moat’ and few cute little attractive food kiosks.

We started with the Bluwater Bay as an introduction – a simulated beach complete with simulated wave filled with simulated beach goers. Dana was thrilled, especially when the waves came…not bad. Only thing was the rubber floats came only in one size and didn’t have one that is customised for children but nevertheless, Mommy got creative and put Dana face down so she could ‘fly’ across the waves. Don’t be fooled though, non-swimmers would still need these floats as the depth of the ‘Bay’ is graduated with the furthest deepest end. Fortunately, the Park provides coloured ‘life vests’ according to one’s age (and size). These life vest bins are strategically placed at various points for ease of retrieval and return. It’s free. There are Balinese-inspired cabanas at the bay which you can rent for an afternoon siesta.

While Angie and Dana were have fun at the simulated beach, I was keen to discover the amenities around the park, particularly if there were lockers to store our belongings. To my delight, I found that they did not merely have a locker system, but a State-of-the-Art one as well! The lockers come in two sizes: $3 for a small one and $5 for a larger one. Best of all, the locker system is fully automated (keyless system!) and the rental is for multiple usages. When booking your locker, you’ll be asked for your birth date and your favourite colour. Key in these information to reopen the locker again (and anytime you wish) to retrieve your belongings throughout your stay in the Park. The interface is extremely user-friendly and self-explanatory. Impressive!

We also spotted cylindrical columns for park goers to place their spectacles, goggles, slippers and other belongings before going onto the rides. Very nifty.

Casting my sights further, it wasn’t difficult to see that what truly entice me are its long winding slides, all peeking through the foliage and beckoning me to try them! To really ‘test’ how good the rides are, I gamely volunteered to be the ‘test dummy’. On a scale of 1 – 5, where 5 being Totally Awesome and 1 for, well…Sedentary, here are my personal ratings Adventure Cove’s Excitement & Thrill Quotient (TQ)!

Now, the Thrill Quotient (TQ)…

Bluwater Bay (TQ: 2)

Have a swell time at Bluwater Bay. Come play, relax and frolic in this giant wave pool.

It’s a great place to hang out with the family while enjoying the occasional waves that come along. The thrill factor largely depends on what you do there – sit there like a beached whale, then you might as well go to one of the real beaches in Sentosa. My only gripe is that the bay is rather small. I can imagine this place full of people during peak periods (i.e. weekends or public holidays!). Overcrowding will definitely lower the fun and hygiene factor. Another thing is that the float provided comes only in one size, small children will need to wear the life vest to be safe. Speaking about safety, it does get deeper at the end and the waves are quite strong so it’s not exactly a place to leave your children unattended to.

Big Bucket (TQ: 3)

An action-packed wonderland of interactive water plays for kids. From the big bucket flush to waterslides, Big Bucket Treehouse is full of fun.

This was the first ‘ride’ which caught Dana’s attention. It’s perfect for children from as young as 3 or 4 years. It has two twirling slides, one taller than the other and both slides provide certain amount of thrill as it does pack quite some speed when zooming down. Life guards are around to monitor and manage the crowd. I particularly like the ‘rope netting’ for you to climb up to the slides. It adds to the excitement but younger kids will need some help with it. Alternatively, you may want to ascend to the slide using the more well-formed platform route.

Duelling Racer (TQ: 2.5)

Grab a racer mat and take your friend on a dueling high-speed competitive plunge to a splashing finish.

This was one the earlier rides I tried when the wife and daughter went wading at the Bluwater Bay. My 4 year old daughter was keen to try this but did not meet the height requirements (much to her disappointment) so Daddy became the solo test dummy. Here, you would take a soft foam board from ‘ground level’ and make your way up to the top of the tall straight slide and basically slide down, gaining speed and momentum as you go along. It’s a good warm-up to get the adrenaline pumping with only one (or is it two?) bumps in the middle of the steep slide, it is over before you know it. Perfect for young primary school kids and not for thrill seekers.

Pipeline Plunge (TQ: 3)

Imagine riding a water tornado in the dark that sends you twisting, turning and churning before splashing out in a pool of water.

Not far from the Duo Racer, there’s a set of taller twirling slides – the Pipeline Plunge and the Tidal Twister. Taking a large rubber float, I made my way up there and once there, you can choose which of the ride you’d like to take. I asked the attendant there and he said “ Short and Fast = Pipeline, Longer = Tidal”. Seeing that the queue for the Pipeline was shorter, I went for it first. So plunged I did. About 70% of the ride is in complete darkness safe for the LED lines that gives you some sense of perspective and balance. It was fast and dark, gaining enough speed to give me a splashing exit. Fun!

Tidal Twister (TQ: 4)

A crowd pleaser with mild to wild transitions, Tidal Twister delivers maximum fun at maximum speed.

There was a much longer queue at this ride. Mainly because it is a longer ride and not as fast as the Pipeline (but not too slow either!). The slide here is has more twist and turns, steep and dark at certain parts. The width at certain juncture may cause you to ‘capsize’ especially if you approach at a great speed and did not ‘steer’ your float well. The dark portion of the ride adds to the suspense. A good ride. I’m impressed.

Riptide Rocket (TQ: 4.5)

Have a blast at Riptide Rocket, Southeast Asia’s first hydro-magnetic coaster. Like an intense rollercoaster on water, it combines all the powerful climbs, plunging drops, terrifying twists and tight turns to set your adrenaline pumping.

After being psyched by the two gentler rides, I’m yearning for more excitement! Seeing the queue for the Rave Racer and hearing that it is a roller-coaster of sorts…well, I’ve gotta get on it. Even on a preview weekend for members, the wait was already a good 30 minutes. When it’s your turn, the ‘conveyor belt’ brings you up (1 minute ride) to the peak slowly which increases your anticipation ala on the roller coaster. Enjoy the peace and tranquility that was once Sentosa before the plunge, turns and roller-coaster-like steep drop where immediately the escalator mechanism will hook on to your float sends you speedily up to the top , more turns and 2 more steep drops! It was heart-stopping to say the least and certainly not for the faint-hearted. For those with spine problems, the jerking from the steep drop and escalator may just add to the injury so you might want to sit out on this ride.

This is really one ride not to be missed and lives up to its reputation of being a roller-coaster on water, except it’s scarier because while on a roller coaster, you have others screaming with you, here…you’re either with just one partner or worse, like in my case…only my own screams. Be warned. You may want to try the other rides first before this. Once you’ve experienced this, the rest would be, well, child’s play.

Spiral Washout and Whirlpool Washout (TQ: 5)

It’s a whirl of excitement as you power through revolutions, twists and turns before spilling out into an open cool splash pool. Hold on tight as you soar at incredible speed through a twisting water flume that will leave everyone reeling for more.

Craving for more action after Riptide Rocket, I walked towards these last two tall slides but alas…the weather played me (and those waiting in queue) out as all rides had to be suspended temporarily due to inclement weather. True enough, the sky started to pour and I had no chance to try them. Oh well, like they say, a good reason to return. But judging from the sizes of these 2 slides, they would definitely pack quite a punch. Estimated TQ: 5

The Adventure River (TQ: 1.5)

Grab a tube and meander down Adventure River through 14 stunning habitats including a lush garden, a mysterious grotto and an underwater tunnel experience full of sea life.

This is suitable for the whole family. Basically, we drifted around the river on a round float, enjoyed the sights and each other’s company. There are waterfalls, overhead underwater tunnel and a grotto to add to the enjoyment. We also floated past the Ray Feeding area and saw the fish feeding in action. Quite a leisurely and scenic ride.

All in all, the rides were of good standard. Do expect some long waiting time in the sun during peak periods but the waiting does add to the anticipation and thrill. Plenty of lifeguards are stationed around the Park to ensure that everyone has a fun and safe time. Most of the rides do require you to be of decent height and, if you ask me, have certain level of water-confidence. Wear your life vest with you at all times. Have a splashing good time!
