Today’s food review is one of our new discoveries in 2013 which has since become our family’s favourite restaurant. Yes you heard it – French dining that is both delectable for the Asian palate and easy on the wallets. Poulét (pronounced as ‘Poo-lay’, meaning chicken) is a chain of French casual dining restaurants offering affordable French classics. It has expanded to 3 outlets in Singapore within a short span of one year but we have visited the Great World City branch twice this month!

The French-themed bistro is at an open dining area outside Aussino and Pumpkin Patch. With an open concept kitchen and Parisian street lamp decor, the atmosphere is modern, comfortable and contemporary, making it a pleasant dining option for families with kids. On the menu, you can find Appetizers like Countryside Mushroom Soup, Escargot, Saucisson (Garlic and Pork Sausages), Salad de Paris and French Onion Soup ($5.80 to $9.80); Main Courses like Iberico Pork Belly, Oxtail de Bourguignon, Mediterranean Stewed Lamb Shank and Braise Duck Leg ( ($8.80 to $15.80); and Desserts such as Banana Bread Pudding, Tiramisu and Caramelised Apple in Puffy Tart ($6.80 to $7.80).

We ordered the Vine Cherry Tomatoes with Feta Cheese as our appetizer. It came served in a mason jar (cute!). One bite and we fell in love with the crunchiness of the cherry tomatoes and the well-mixed tangy sweet apricot dressing. There was also a sprinkle of yellow sultanas which gives the salad an interesting texture. A refreshing start to our French meal!

Who knew cherry tomatoes and feta cheese can be best friends?

The signature dish here is its Poulét Roti ($15.80 for half, $28.80 for whole). The chicken is brined for a full day in a traditional recipe and placed in a rotisserie for a slow roast till its golden brown. The accompanying home-made white and creamy mushroom Chardonnay Sauce is a winner – probably one of the most lip-smacking chicken sauces we’ve ever tasted. Daddy remarked that French cuisines are exquisite because of their sauces. Poulét aced in this department and made an otherwise ordinary roast chook such a prized find.

We ordered a whole chicken to share and it came resting in creamy Chardonnay sauce, stuffed with fresh spinach salad. The meat was amazingly succulent, juicy, tasty. And Dana’s favourite part of the chicken? The skin that was so crisp and oh so flavourful. Just like its tagline – “Amazing French Roast Chicken“, Poulét truly puts other rotisseries to shame. We devoured the chicken within minutes and could easily finish a second chick had we not wanted to leave room for desserts…

THE Star of the restaurant!

Daddy and Dana are big dessert fans and it would be a grave injustice not to end this French dining experience on a sweet note. On our first visit, we tried the Tiramisu and Banana Bread Pudding, both of which were unforgettable. Dana requested for the Banana Bread Pudding again at this meal, considering that she just had her ears pierced earlier in the day, we decided to indulge her…Boy, we were not disappointed. The warmness of the soft and sweet bread pudding contrasted against the icy-coldness of the vanilla ice-cream which melts in your mouth…only one word can describe the sensation – heavenly!

Granted, this is not fine dining but we really enjoyed the food at Poulét. Unpretentious French food in a relaxed dining environment (with jazzy French music playing in the background). It was said that the head chef formerly hailed from Les Amis and Au Petit Salut (no wonder!). During our visit on a Saturday evening, the restaurant was full (I’ve heard that long queues are a norm at their Bugis+ outlet!). Service wise, there is room for improvement. Although there are ample high chairs for babies, they only have plastic disposable cutlery for children. For the price we paid, we thought that it was value for money for food of this quality. If you are looking for a good dining option, do consider bringing your family to Poulét.
