On the first day of the Lunar New Year, instead of visiting relatives, my brother-in-law brought us to visit one of the newest attractions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Farm in the City 城の农场! Having been to actual working farms in Australia and Taiwan, we were initially skeptical of how ‘educational’ and enjoyable it would be and boy, we’re glad it did not disappoint! We were blessed with breezy overcast weather and all of us spent an enjoyable morning there.

Experiencing Animals, Plants and Nature at Farm in the City!

Beautiful flora and plants in the farm…

The farm is located out in Seri Kembangan (along the Damansara Puchong highway). It is great for city folks like us who want to escape the urban jungle and see some unusual and exotic animals up close and personal. The farm is divided into several sections including a reptile corner, koi pond and bird aviary. There is a turtle and tortoise section which is home to about five different types of these hard-shell reptiles: the snake sanctuary has rows of the slithering creatures housed in tanks (We even saw a snake moulting!). The farm is beautifully landscaped with many pretty flora, but the real superstars at the farm are the animals, ranging from peacocks, geese and iguanas to marmosets, deer and bunnies.

Dana and her cousins from KL!

What we really like about this farm is that the kids can really interact with the animals – from patting a giant tortoise to feeding a deer from the palm of your hand. There is even a section where kids can go inside the rabbit and guinea pigs enclosure and play with them. All the animal feeding sessions are free (already included in the admission price) and they do have a discount family package so we thought the experience was quite worthwhile.

Let me bring you on a pictorial tour of this rare gem!

Cute welcome signs at the entrance that’s sure to excite the kids!

First stop, the Reptile Section. I am not a reptile person but the collection here did wow me!

Tortoises of the world unite!

Big ones vs small ones…

Dana’s happy to meet Mr. Giant Tortoise!

Feeding Mr. Tortoise…

The Radiated Tortoise with its radiation-like patterned shell!

We saw other reptiles and one of the most interesting sights were ancient-looking alligators from the Jurassic age!

An Alligator Snapping Turtle?! Is it an Alligator or a Turtle?

Next, we headed to the Bird Aviary where the kids experienced hand-feeding few species of exotic birds.

Resplendent but extremely territorial

She was brave enough to let the birds peck on her palms…

Dana had fun feeding all the different types of free-ranging birds.

This in particular caught our eye. Pity we do not know the name of this rainbowed-coloured bird

Loving it so far at the farm!

More feeding sessions, this time to birds that swim!

Mandarin Ducks frolicking in the pond…

Interactive experiences like these made the visit memorable!

Next stop, we visited the Pet Village, one of the kids’ favourite as they get to cuddle bunnies, guinea pigs and catch some fishes!

The girls giving it a shot at Longkang fishing! It’s not as easy as it looks 🙂

Little huts belonging to the furry pets

Hannah with the guinea pigs…

Free-ranging chickens enhance the kampung feel…

Next, we visited the African Safari section where we met some interesting Safari animals.

A small-framed antelope with a strange name.

Stef feeding the Kirk’s Dik Dik…they are quite like mouse deers (Kancil)

These antelopes are quite shy…

A gigantic African crested Porcupine!

At close range too…

Some gigantic lizard…

These are so adorable!!

Before we left, Dana and Stef took some shots with the parakeets and canaries.

Look Mom! It’s on my hand!

Then on my shoulders!

Dana’s favourite part of the farm visit? The pony rides!

Our happy little jockey…on a handsome pony

What a way to end a perfect day – galloping on a pony!

This farm has exceeded our expectations and given the kids an authentic interactive encounter with the animals. Not only is it keen and the animals well cared-for, the selection of exotic animals also made the trip worthwhile. It definitely warrants a return visit the next time we’re in KL.

A Rabbit and a Raccoon…

Happy CNY from our family to yours!
