More than just Nostalgia

My family and I are loyal supporters of SRT’s The Little Company’s children productions. They are highly creative, engaging, superb productions. Merely few minutes into watching their latest production – Chicken Little, I knew I had to write this review. Because the story of this little bird and his friends struck such a special chord with me – I had read this story as a child and have never revisited this fable again…until now, with my wife and children in tow.

More than just nostalgia, Chicken Little is one of those underrated stories that are tucked away in the annals of children’s stories that are, unfortunately, not as widely known unlike, say, Jack and the Beanstalk.

A ‘Must-Watch’

It’s a pity because this is one story that through its simplicity, teaches us much about so many important lessons in life. Which is why this is one children’s musical that is a must-watch for families this year end.

Synopsis:

Chicken Little is a story about how a little chick, in an attempt to save the world from the ‘falling’ sky, gathers a group of friends to set off to see the King, hoping that he can do something to stop the catastrophy. Along the way, the quintet overcame challenges, forged friendships and most importantly, built their own self-confidence, courage and self-belief.

Allegories and Alliteration:

The musical is a great way for kids to hear, watch and learn about rhymes, allegories and alliterations. Parents can use the musical to highlight the interesting use of these literary methods through the speech and songs. Furthermore, the moral of the story is presented in such a simple way, parents can use the situations presented in the musical to highlight important values of, say, team work, encouraging our friends, courage etc.

Adults, Amused

SRT’s children’s productions are entertaining even for the adults. The performance is dotted with witty humor that adults can appreciate. The creative use of props is something everyone can look forward to, particularly the colorful stage design and costumes. With minimal prop movements, the audience was able to focus entirely on the storyline and acting that enhances the experience. The humor in the musical was a draw. Parents and kids were laughing out loud at the slapstick comedic elements and the puns/jokes that form part of the script.

The Set, Script and Acting:

The talented cast (comprising of Alyssa Lie, Natalie Yeap, Dwyane Lau, Ann Lek, Crenshaw Yeo) is top-notch, with lines clearly enunciated and energetic spot-on delivery. There was nary a ‘boring’ moment as the plot was kept short and sharp (great for younger kids with short attention spans). In addition, there was puppetry involved, which added that bit of unique experience worthy of this classic fable. We particularly like the theme of ‘inclusion’ in the story where the duckling was born with a disability yet readily included by Chicken Little and his friends on their little adventure to save the world.
