When I first laid eyes on the new Philips PerfectCare Pressurized Steam Generator (PSG) Iron, I thought I had inherited a ‘beast’. At first glance, it is huge, much bigger than a standard steam iron, but on closer inspection, it looks big because it comes in 2 parts: the iron itself and the the 1.5L detachable ‘water-tank’ base unit, which allows us up to 2 hours of uninterrupted ironing without refilling. The actual iron that we hold and move is no heavier than a regular iron – in fact, it’s lighter and sleeker than other steam irons because the water is stored separately in the water tank, not the iron itself.

Ironing ranks high on my list of most dreaded household chores (in fact, it’s at the top!). No matter what irons I bought, I never seemed to be able to iron a shirt or pants well. Moreover, it just takes up too much precious time which could use put to better use. After marriage, the husband invested in a standing steam iron in a bid to shorten the ironing time for me. Even that didn’t help and we eventually got rid of it after I was accidentally scalded by the steam on more than one occasion.

So it was understandable that I was a bit skeptical when I hear I would be reviewing the Philips PerfectCare PSG Iron. I wasn’t sure how different a ‘pressurized steam generator’ iron would be… after all, my current iron has steam too. Well, I soon learnt that because a steam generator iron produces a larger amount of steam, at a much higher pressure than a normal steam iron, it is capable of removing the creases from the clothes more easily, even on really tough fabrics. I’m beginning to like it already!

Here are 3 ways the Philips PerfectCare PSG Iron helps us take all the risks and pain out of ironing:

100% easy to use

To get started, all you need to do is to plug it in and press the on button at the back of the iron. The iron starts to heat up very quickly (in 2 mins) and you know it is ready when the light indicator starts to glow blue. After that, ironing is a breeze. There are no temperature settings to meddle and no dials to turn! It magically controls the optimal temperature of the iron regardless of the fabric ironed. I can work through a pile of ironing without worrying about mixing fabrics; I can iron a fragile silk blouse directly after a pair of jeans and both will be ironed perfectly!

This “one size fits all” feature is a God-sent invention for busy working Moms (esp. those who dislike ironing like me!). First of all, we need not have to worry about choosing the right dials for the right fabrics or worse, fuss with adjusting to the right temperature dials multiple times during a single ironing session, making it 100% easy to use! I was so happy with the PerfectCare PSG Iron, I was able to press Dana’s Flower Girl Dress myself without having to outsource it to the laundromat!

I am also delighted that the PerfectCare PSG Iron comes with a 1.5 litre detachable water tank which is sufficient for 2 hours of ironing (no need for constant refilling, less hassle, faster ironing, yay!). Refilling is easy because the water tank is detachable and you can fill it straight from the tap without turning off the power.

100% safe

The Philips PerfectCare PSG Iron is designed so that we can leave it standing on even delicate fabrics for 5 minutes without it causing any burns or scorches. Guaranteed 100% safe, even on delicate fabrics (such as silk, cotton, linen, wool, polyester…). I like the safety function where it switches off automatically when left unattended, leaving no room for burn blunders or home accidents. For busy multitasking Moms with young kids at home, we know how easy it is to get distracted for a second and I must admit I’ve left the iron on when I had to attend to the doorbell or phone call. With this safety feature, I can rest assure that the iron would not be a potential fire hazard at home. Fantastic!

100% fast

The Philips PerfectCare PSG Iron has a higher steam pressure than normal irons which helps us get our ironing done in record time and with very little effort, freeing us up to spend time with our family. It’s 100% fast on the toughest, resistant fabrics (like denim). Even from cold, it only takes 2 minutes for the iron to warm up. That translates into actual time and cost savings in terms of lesser electricity consumption!

Overall, I am very impressed with the Philips PerfectCare PSG Iron as it makes ironing such a breeze! The water tank is bulky however and you will need a bigger ironing board (or place it on the ground). The PerfectCare PSG Iron goes best with Philips Easy8 Ironing Board which incorporates a unique Shoulder Wing System. If we combine the PerfectCare PSG Iron with this Easy8 Ironing Board, we truly have perfect solution to ‘Ironing for Dummies’!
