In my previous post, I exposed seven little known facts of the deadly Aedes Mosquitoes which are responsible for the dengue epidemic. Even though the number of cases has gone down in recent weeks, it would be foolish to let our guard down. During the ‘Fight Dengue’ Volunteer Training Workshop which I attended recently, I was very encouraged and heartened to see so many community volunteers selflessly giving their time and energy to help their community and neighbourhoods stay free of Dengue. Many times, it’s a thankless task as they put themselves on the front line in these ‘high risk’ active clusters.

For households located in Dengue clusters, National Environment Agency (NEA) also carries out a special water-based ULV (Ultra Low Volume) Insecticide Misting to complement outdoor thermal fogging (which eliminates the adult mosquitoes). The Aedes mosquitoes is an indoor mosquito that likes to hide in dark corners indoors, therefore residents are encouraged to spray insecticides in dark corners of their premises such as toilets, under and behind the bed and other pieces of furniture. The ULV equipment is hand-operated. ULV spraying in a typical HDB unit will take approximately 10 minutes.

The reality is that a community is made up of homes and individuals. The effectiveness of the outreach of NEA and its volunteers will be limited if individuals (like you and I) do not take personal responsibilities and precautions to be more vigilant. It can be as simple as carrying out the 5-step Mozzie Wipeout daily in our homes (which would take less than 5 minutes) to stem the the breeding of mosquitoes.

MPs also join the ranks to spread the Fight Dengue message

NEA officers shared that surprisingly, the most common breeding grounds are found indoors – in homes rather than outdoors in parks and gardens. These are some areas where Aedes mosquitoes tend to breed:

Interiors
1. Flower pot plates of indoor plants
2. Toilet bowls left opened for prolonged periods (especially when away on vacation)
3. Unattended water-filled drinking cups

Exteriors
1. Pots, Pails, Toys, Bottles (and bottle caps) left in gardens or corridors (where rain water accumulates)
2. Pet’s food/drink dish left unattended at corridors and void decks
3. Uncapped bamboo pole holders
4. Flower pot plates of potted plants
5. Clogged gutters and drains

This weekend, Daddy has planned a surprise National Day staycation for Dana. We would be taking all of these preventive steps to safeguard our homes from becoming a breeding place for Aedes mosquitoes when we are away.

– Cover all toilet bowls in our home.
– Seal off the overflow pipe of the flushing cistern.
– Cover all and floor traps.
– Turn over all water storage containers.

A community is made up of many homes, so if every household diligently carry out the 5-step Mozzie Wipeout, coupled with a regular habit to rid-out stagnant water, we can keep our homes, community and loved ones safe from Dengue. Be safe, not sorry.
