Last Christmas, hordes of parent holiday shoppers snapped up Furbies as Christmas gifts for their kids to the extent that it was out of stock. We never really understood what the hype was about until Dana claimed her classmates have it and so does her playmates in the neighbourhood. For the uninitiated, a Furby is a furry, electronic plush resembling an owl-like pet, complete with a speaking capabilities and, like any pets, a ‘mind of it own’.

Last month, when the kind folks at Hasbro invited us to the new generation Furby Boom launch, Dana couldn’t be more delighted. It was an early Christmas wish came true. This new generation of Furby, named ‘Furby Boom‘ brings a whole new level of fun and companionship by combining physical and digital play. Furby owners can play and interact with their Furbies through an all-new Furby Boom app, which is which is available for free download at the App Store and Google Play .

The new Furby Boom app, which we tried on an iPad, has a lot of fun, interactive content: you can encourage your Furby to lay an egg into your iPad, which later hatches to become a little virtual ‘Furbling’ that you can groom/feed/maintain, much like the Tamagotchi I grew up playing with. You can play games (such as Furball soccer) with your Furbling, treat your Furbling to a lovely spa and even give it a medical check-up!

We also like the additional features such as the Furbish translator and the ability to name and personalise our Furby. We soon also learnt that the more the owners talk and interact with your Furby, the more English it speaks (a newly purchased Furby starts out speaking entirely ‘Furbish’, the unique language that all Furbies use). What’s amazing too is the way you treat your Furby will shape its personality – so the more tender loving care and attention you give it, the better!

Furby owners are able to collect over 50 eggs within the app and eventually build a Furby Boom city of your own. We were told there is only ONE Golden Furbling in Singapore waiting to be hatched, so if you start collecting your Furbling eggs, you might just be that very lucky ONE!

With so much fun to be had, the new Furby Boom will be on wish-list of many kids this Christmas. Furby Boom comes in six attractive new patterns (with four more new patterns available in October). Judging by the frantic buying last Christmas, it’s advisable to grab your Furby Boom early in order not to avoid disappointment!
